For most people, donning a cute, brand new outfit is exhilarating. Until something out of the ordinary is discovered, the excitement evaporates, successfully ruining the moment.

Grease stains on a pair of Aritzia sweatpants? Disgusting. Patterns vanishing after using a lint roller on Lululemon leggings? Aggravating. Finding a sharp object stitched into a PrettyLittleThing dress? Well, it was enough to boil this woman’s blood.

“I’m glad I got this on camera,” North Carolina-based TikTok creator Niani (@shondarhimesstanaccount) says, wiggling what appears to be a pointy mechanism sticking out of the hem of the Pretty Little Thing black and white polka dot dress she is wearing.

“Oh, my god!” she gasps, the object tearing a hole through the fabric. Once she pulls it out, she holds the handle of this needlelike object and examines it; her jaw drops in shock. “What the [expletive] is this and why is it in my dress?” the content creator asks, angrily.

How It All Started

Immediately, the video cuts to what occurred prior to the unpleasant surprise. “Get ready with me to go to Steak 48,” Niani says, standing in her bathroom, her face dewey in preparation for the makeup routine. “I was leaving the mall and this guy invited me to get drinks with him.”

Then, she rinses her face with water from the sink faucet and dries it with a nearby towel.

“Two Face, Born This Way,” she says, dabbing the concealer, along with bronzer on her face, rubbing it into her skin, leaving a glowy finish. From there, the content creator continues the beauty regimen to Olivia Dean’s “Lady Lady.”

First, Niani adds color correction under her eyes, followed by concealer. Next, she applies bronzer on her temples, chin, and nose and blends it in with a fluffy brush. Lastly, she touches up her face using foundation and blush and wraps it altogether with setting spray, which she spritzes over her face.

A Not So ‘PrettyLittleThing’ Discovery

Afterward, Niani unveils the infamous PrettyLittleThing polka dot dress. At first, everything seems to be fine–for now.

“I’m snatched,” she says, smoothing out the garment. “I feel like no tights and some pumps. I think it would be cute.”

However, the lovely outfit takes a lethal turn. “They literally left a tool in my dress. I’ve never worn this dress before,” she says, lifting up the dress skirt to reveal an indent of the unknown object. “There’s a tool here.”

When she bends the edges, it allegedly pricks her. “It just stabbed me,” the content creator says. “Do I have a lawsuit on my hands? What the freak?”

Subsequently, she glides the tool outward, and the sharp end sticks out of the fabric. “I’m just gonna have to tear the dress because it’s all closed in.”

Once Niani removes the mysterious gimmick, she unveils it all in its glory. “It’s literally rusted,” she says, zooming in on the discolored metal close to the handle. “What is that? Did someone put it in there or was it a return?”

In three simple words, Niani describes the situation in the caption as a “Valid crash out.”

What Is That Tool?

Niani’s video racked up over 798,000 views, where viewers theorized what this foreign object could possibly be.

“Is that a seam ripper sewn into the hem of your dress?? What??” one viewer asked.

“I think it’s the sewing tool that unstitches the thread,” another suggested.

“That looks like a sewing stiletto. Used to push the seams. It was probably for finishing the lined hem and got left in and the sewer was looking around for it not realizing they sewed it in the dress,” a third proposed.

Further investigation revealed that the metal device in question is a tailor’s awl. This handheld needle-like tool is primarily used to create and enlarge holes in materials without destroying the fabric. However, it can be used to perform various tasks, making it a handy, multifunctional utensil.

Is This Grounds For A Lawsuit Against PrettyLittleThing?

Moreover, others urged the content creator to take legal action.

“Yes get a lawyer,” one commenter remarked.

“Defo a lawsuit how tf did that pass the quality control,” a second concurred.

“Call your lawyer immediately,” a third echoed.

Indeed, it seems what Nani experienced was a case of defective product, according to Morgan & Morgan. Since the camera captured the sewing mechanism allegedly poking her, she may have a claim against Pretty Little Thing. To file a lawsuit in North Carolina, Riddle & Riddle states the plaintiff must:

  • File a claim within three years of the injury.
  • Collect all documented evidence.
  • Keep the product and everything that came with it.
  • Seek medical attention.
  • Document financial loss, including medical bills.
