Podcasts Are Creepy in the Trailer for ‘Undertones’

Anybody who has ever done a deep dive into the “creepy” parts of YouTube are familiar with mysterious and unsettling audio. There are whole videos dedicated to them, with the express purpose to be watched alone in the dark because you love to torture yourself. In those videos, however, the audio often comes with an explanation of some sort.

In A24’s new horror feature Undertone, from writer-director Ian Tuason, the audio tips more into the paranormal. Starring Nina Kiri, Adam DiMarco, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, and Jeff Yung, the synopsis for the film is as follows: “The host of a popular paranormal podcast becomes haunted by terrifying recordings mysteriously sent her way.”

As one YouTube commenter said: “‘Hey guys welcome back to the evil noises podcast. This episode we’re listening to some evil noises.’ ‘Oh wow, these are some really evil noises.'”

The first trailer for the film, which releases in theaters on Friday, March 13, can be viewed now. A film focusing on audio is no small feat, and from the trailer alone the sound mixing is doing its job. Jump scares with loud noises are tiring; I want to get so uncomfortably creeped out by audio that I squirm in my seat, and Undertones looks to promise that experience.

This one IS for the dark side of the internet girlies

Now, I watched the trailer with AirPods in, and let me just say: This is how this is meant to be experienced. It’s the middle of the day and I still got chills. There is no doubt that a theatrical experience will be just as unsettling, but Undertones begs you to watch it with headphones on. So imagine watching this one alone, at night, in the dark. The final “I like it here in the dark” whispered at the end made me look over my shoulder.

2026 is already looking promising on the horror front, with films like Primate (January 9) and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (January 16) slated for release in the next few weeks. It will be interesting to see where this one will fall once it’s released.

Also, A24, when are you going to start selling branded headphones? I’m asking for everybody.
