A Cult Thriller Remake That Hollywood Was Expected to Botch Just Dropped a Trailer, and It Kinda Slaps

Ever since there’s been a modern film industry, there have been remakes. Stories have been retold over and over again to varying degrees of success, ranging from misfires to new classics that genuinely add something to the story. If a newly-released trailer is any indication, a new film arriving in the next few months just might be the latter.

This week, Independent Film Company released the first teaser trailer for Over Your Dead Body, ahead of its premiere at SXSW in March and theatrical debut in April. The film is an English-language adaptation of The Trip (I onde dager), the 2021 Norwegian film starring Noomi Rapace and Aksel Hennie that became a cult classic after streaming on Netflix. This time around, Jason Segel and Samara Weaving are starring in the main roles, as a couple tries to reconnect while on vacation, only to find out they have plans to kill each other.

The cast of Over Your Dead Body also includes Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and Keith Jardine. The script for the remake is written by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, who are best known as the comedy duo BriTANick.

Who Is Directing Over Your Dead Body?

The Trip was originally helmed by Tommy Wirkola, who wrote the script alongside John Niven and Nick Ball. Wirkola was originally set to direct the English remake as well, before departing from the project years later. Comedian, actor, and director Jorma Taccone, who is best known for his work with The Lonely Island, then stepped in to helm the project. Taccone previously directed MacGruber and co-directed The Lonely Island’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping alongside fellow group member Akiva Schaffer.

“Jorma Taccone stands as one of the most creative and reliably brilliant voices in comedy and we are delighted to collaborate with him and our friends at 87North, XYZ, and Resolute Films on OVER YOUR DEAD BODY,” Scott Shooman, Head of IFC Entertainment Group, previously said in a statement. “The film is a dark, twisted, and riotous action comedy, with a killer cast – a perfect recipe to delight audiences on the big screen.”

“I am THRILLED to have Independent Film Company as a partner on releasing OVER YOUR DEAD BODY,” Taccone echoed at the time. “I am equally pumped to have audiences watch this movie in real live theaters and love that IFC understands how important it is for a movie this kick ass and full of twists to have a real theatrical release. If I have a third child, I’m probably going to name it IFC!”

Producers on the project include 87North’s Kelly McCormick and David Leitch (The Fall GuyBullet Train); XYZ Films’ Guy Danella (Violent NightLove Hurts), Nick Spicer, abd Aram Tertzakian; and Resolute Films’ Lee Kim (DualGet Away). Taccone, Tommy Wirkola, Nate Bolotin, Maxime Cottray, Timo Argillander, Andrea Scarso, Kjetil Omberg and Jorgen Storm Rosenberg served as EPs, with Karen Gillan as co-producer.

Over Your Dead Body is set to be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, April 24th.
