‘I have fallen victim to the Old Navy leather Billie fart pants’: Woman finds pants on sale at Old Navy. Then she bends down

Have you ever tried on an outfit that looked perfect in-store, then gone home and realized there’s something deeply wrong with it?
Maybe the zipper gets stuck way too easily. Maybe properly caring for it requires way more work than anyone should be expected to provide a single clothing item. No matter what it is, there can be just a single thing that can completely ruin an outfit.
In this case, a certain problem with this clothing item can result in more than just a bad fit. According to TikToker Katie (@katiechickensandwich), the problem with these Old Navy pants is so severe that even bending over requires an explanation.
What’s Wrong With These Old Navy Pants?
In a video with over 633,000 views, Katie says that, when she first laid eyes on these black leather pants, she thought they were too good to be true.
“I went to Old Navy this week and they had a ton of stuff on sale,” she starts. “They had these black leather pants on sale, and I was like, ‘Amazing! Add to cart.’ They’re thirteen dollars. Like, why are these thirteen dollars? They’re so nice!”
However, when Katie got them home and actually tried them on, she realized why the pants were so heavily discounted. To demonstrate, she squats—releasing what sounds like flatulence.
“I saw a TikTok about these!” she says in disbelief. She adds that she could not believe that she appears to have accidentally purchased the notorious Old Navy pants that make it sound like you’re farting.
She’s Not The Only One
In the comments section, several users said that they, too, experienced this issue. Or accidentally purchased the pants without realizing their true power.
“Those are what I’d call standing pants,” joked a commenter.
“I bought these and haven’t worn them but for a work Christmas party(the tame one). I am going home today and trying this immediately,” added another.
Others posted similar videos showing the same problem. So, what’s really going on here?
Why Does This Happen?
For context, the Old Navy pants in question appear to be the High-Waisted Billie Faux-Leather Ankle Trouser. As the name states, these are composed not of leather but of polyester.
One of the issues with both leather and polyester manufactured to look like leather is that the material isn’t particularly breathable. Sometimes, designers will solve this by widening the pants to allow minor air circulation. Or providing small, difficult-to-notice vents so air can escape.
However, even with wide leg cuts and small vents, it may not be enough to allow all air to escape — especially if one stresses the pants by doing something like sitting down or squatting quickly. Consequently, all of the air tries to get out at once, vibrating the material and, occasionally, causing a fart sound.
Can It Be Fixed?
If you’ve already bought these pants and are set on wearing them, here’s how you can do that without making your coworkers wonder who cut the cheese.
As suggested by one commenter under Katie’s video, an owner of these pants can “get a seam ripper (sewing tool) and clip 1/4” of the stitches in the seams in several inconspicuous places, which would release trapped air gently/quietly as you move normally. Be sure to add a stitch or 2 to both sides of where you clipped, so the seam does not unravel, and make a huge hole.”
Alternatively, one can take their pants to a tailor who can add grommeted holes in appropriate areas. This can improve airflow and reduce the risk of something like this occurring.
Alternatively, you can invest in some other leather pants.
