‘I was so gobsmacked’: New York woman’s Hinge date goes to the bathroom 15 minutes in. Then the hostess comes out to talk to her

A woman in New York may not have found true love on her first date with a man she met on Hinge. But she definitely had an unforgettable experience.
“The story I’m about to tell you I thought only happened in movies,” Ms. Truth Teller (@getthechicagolook) says in a viral TikTok about the ill-fated date. Her date’s behavior was so unexpected that she put him on blast by tagging him.
At the beginning of her post, Ms. Truth Teller says that, save for Raya, she swore off online dating a few years ago.
“Their incentive is to keep us on there… the longer we’re on there, the more we pay for it, the more frustrated we are, the more we keep paying for it. That’s how they make their money,” she explains of dating apps.
Her life had become a monotonous cycle of work and home, work and home, so she recently decided to get back out there.
She says the man she matched with on Hinge wasn’t really her type and, based on their careers, she didn’t really think it would work out. But she decided to give him a chance, thinking perhaps he’d surprise her.
Ms. Truth Teller may now be wishing that she hadn’t.
Their date, she says, lasted all of 15 minutes. Then he went to the bathroom, never to be seen again.
What happened on the date?
Ms. Truth Teller, who lives in Brooklyn, says that things seemed off with her Hinge date from the jump. She says he was extremely nervous, his hands were shaking, and she thought he might have a panic attack at any moment.
“Multiple times during the date, I was like, ‘Are you OK? Like it’s OK, it’s just a date,'” she recalls.
If he was uncomfortable at first, she feels it only got worse after she told him what she does for a living. She works in business, and Les appears to own a company that offers social media management, brand management, and other related services.
“Just know, different tax brackets. Different tax brackets,” she says.
They ordered drinks and food, then she says he told her he had to use the bathroom.
“Two minutes go by, three minutes go by, five minutes go by. I’m not even thinking anything of it,” Ms. Truth Teller says.
Then the hostess approached and told her that her date was gone. On his way out, she says he’d asked the hostess to let her know that he had an emergency.
“When I say I was so gobsmacked.… I didn’t even know how to process it,” Ms. Truth Teller says.
Initially, she gave her date the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he really did have an emergency. Then she opened Hinge and saw that he had already unmatched with her.
“He literally ghosted me 15 minutes into the date,” she says.
While Ms. Truth Teller acknowledges that a love match was probably not to be, she considers his behavior way out of bounds.
“Now you’d think I should be embarrassed sharing this. But I’m not,” she says. “Because I’m going to tag him. Because that was crazy. Don’t ever do that [expletive] to me again. Don’t ever do that to any girl again. Like have you lost your mind?”
Hinge date reacts to viral post
Ms. Truth Teller’s post spread far and wide. It’s closing on 1 million views in the two weeks since it was posted.
Comments on her post are filled with advice, sympathy, and opinions.
“The dating apps are a humiliation ritual,” said one.
Another said, “I respect this because you tagged him.” Ms. Truth Teller replied, “We let men get away with too much.”
True to her word, Ms. Truth Teller tagged her alleged date, Les Is More (@leslieanokye), in the post. Les currently has a pinned post on his TikTok account acknowledging what he describes as “the Hinge date drama.”
“I was definitely wrong for how I left and addressed the situation,” he writes in the post. Les insists he didn’t actually “dine,” but adds that he “still should’ve communicated that I wasn’t feeling it and my mind was preoccupied.”
He also says that he’s acknowledged the situation in two now-deleted videos. He adds that he accepts “accountability” and intends to “work on it in the future.”
Les further insists he apologized, but his date didn’t accept it.
“Sorry again for the commotion this caused,” he continues. “We all learn from our mistakes and try to do better.”
Les did not respond to an email sent to the address on what appears to be his business website or a direct message sent via TikTok. His account does not appear to accept messages from people he doesn’t follow.
As for Ms. Truth Teller, she’s also ready to move on from the saga. Via direct message, she told the Mary Sue, “I don’t wanna talk about it anymore.” She declined to comment further other than to say she thinks the matter has been discussed enough.
@getthechicagolook now should i tag him? @leslieanokye the loser in question
