Mom waiting in the carpool line has to choose between her ‘morals’ and picking up her kid from school quicker: ‘Am I a bad person?’

It’s an easy choice.

Mom in carpool line has to choose between her morals and picking up her som from school quicker.

The school carpool line is the ultimate test of patience. For TikTok creator Erica (@yo_thats_erica), it has also become a moral battlefield.

While waiting to pick up her child, Erica realized that most parents were stubbornly waiting in one long line. They all left a second, parallel lane completely empty despite no set rule. So, she asks her viewers whether using the available lane a “common sense” move or a “diabolical” breach of courtesy?

Her dilemma is between being a “good citizen” and feeling like you’re pulling a “fast one” on your fellow parents.

The carpool line functions like a double drive-thru

Erica explained that her child’s school uses a two-lane system that eventually merges into one. It’s almost like the layout at a McDonald’s drive-thru. There’s enough space for roughly 20 cars to line up in each lane. But despite that fact, she noticed that the majority of parents congregate in just one line.

Every parent pulling up to that one line essentially makes the process twice as long for themselves. But for the first month of school, Erica, too, stayed in the longer line out of a sense of “morals.” Her reasoning was, she did not want to skip ahead of those who arrived before her.

A friend’s advice triggered a crisis of conscience

The turning point came when Erica’s friend Sydney pointed out the absurdity of waiting in a long line. She reasoned that the second lane was purpose-built for traffic flow and used the “McDonald’s logic.” Her argument was if one lane is shorter at a restaurant, you naturally take it.

Now, Erica has started using the shorter lane, but she admits it makes her feel “guilty” and “dirty.” She also expressed a fear that all the parents in the long line must be watching her with judgment. They must be thinking she is scummy for bypassing them.

Erica is caught in the social pressure of the carpool line

Erica’s dilemma boils down to a conflict between “unspoken rules” and “common sense.” She feels “torn” because using the second lane often means getting her child first, even if 50 cars arrived before her. “Do I keep my morals… or do I use my good common sense?” she asked her viewers.

What Erica is describing is essentially a “zipper merge,” a traffic maneuver that is technically more efficient for everyone involved. From a technical point of view, she’s actually doing the right thing by taking the shorter lane.

Traffic engineers themselves suggest using all available lanes until the merge point. This reduces the overall length of the traffic backup and keeps intersections clear. While it feels like “cheating” to those waiting in a single-file line, the two-lane system is designed to handle a higher volume of vehicles in a smaller physical space.

TikTok viewers simply discarded the carpool morals

Every comment on Erica’s video told her straight to “get in that line.” They also showed zero sympathy for those waiting in the long line. “Them ppl had a choice to go to that second line and they didn’t. You better get in that second line!” one viewer remarked, dismissing Erica’s guilt.

“That long line would never see me… Look at them like, why yall didn’t get in the short line?” another added, advocating for the efficiency route. “Your friend is right… the other people ain’t using they brains so i get right in front,” a third shared, validating Sydney’s “McDonald’s logic.”

Courtesy doesn’t have to mean inefficiency

In the “big ’26,” we are all just trying to get our kids and go home without causing a scene. While you might feel like everyone is looking at you, the “moral” choice might actually be the one that clears the road the fastest.

If the school painted two lanes, they want you to use two lanes. Don’t feel “dirty” for using the provided infrastructure. So, we hope Erica has finally embraced the second lane for good.
