‘He was loud’: Ohio woman goes on first date to a yoga studio. Then she realizes he’s wearing Meta glasses

We’ve all been there. You go on a date, things are going well—then, suddenly, you get the ick.
What exactly sparks this ick varies from person to person. Sometimes, it can be a major annoyance, like bad breath. Other times, it can be something minor—for example, some women reported ditching a date because their partner didn’t know what an optometrist was, or repeatedly spelled “cool” as “kool.”
This woman says that she ended things with a man for several reasons. One of those reasons was the glasses he chose to wear to their date.
What Went Wrong With This Woman’s Date?
In her video, TikTok user @beekerssneakers recounts a recent, unpleasant dating experience.
According to the TikToker, she met a man on Hinge who intrigued her. The two matched and, after a few phone dates, they decided to meet up in person. While she observed a “potential red flag” in the way he talked about his ex, she decided not to think too much of it.
The pair decided to meet on New Year’s Eve as it was the only time they had mutually available. That said, the TikToker insisted on meeting earlier in the day as “I will not be dedicating my entire New Year’s Eve to someone that I’ve just met.”
For their first date, the pair ended up going to a yoga class. While things were OK, she says that he did one thing that made her uncomfortable.
“He was talking to me randomly during the yoga class,” she recalls. Although she says she spoke to him with “a little whisper here and there,” she states that his responses were disruptive.
“He was loud in his response in the middle of the yoga class, which was weird,” she says.
From there, the pair decided to stop into a nearby restaurant for a drink and appetizers. It was here that she noticed something strange about her date.
What Was This Man Wearing?
During the meal, the TikToker says her date’s behavior was occasionally off-putting—for example, he talked loudly despite it being a quiet restaurant. That said, she notes that some of his other actions, such as holding her hand and sitting next to her, were “really sweet.”
However, during the meal, the TikToker noticed something strange about his glasses.
“I did notice his glasses were extra thick. And I recall, in the moment, thinking, ‘Huh, I think his glasses are Meta glasses,’” the TikToker says. “So, I straight up ask him, because this is who I am. I say, ‘Your glasses are nice. I like how thick they are. Are they Meta glasses?’”
“And he says, ‘No,’” the TikToker continues. “I said, ‘Really? ‘Cause they look just like Meta glasses.’ And I’m looking, like, deeply into his eyes, and he goes, ‘No.’”
For context, the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses allow wearers to record audio and video in real time. While the glasses are supposed to have a light on while recording, some users have found methods for disabling this light. Additionally, some may not be able to tell when the recording is taking place.
In follow-up videos, the TikToker says that she determined the relationship would not work. While she says she doesn’t believe him to be a “bad dude,” she cites uncomfortable behavior from the man, his self-admitted desire to be “obnoxious,” and the fact that he was a Trump supporter as reasons why she knew they could not continue on together.
Although she never got confirmation about whether he was wearing Meta glasses, she says that, in retrospect, she is positive that he was.
“Do I think he was recording on those Meta glasses? I’d bet my life on it,” she shares. “I could tell. I could just tell. You know what I mean? I could tell. Otherwise, why would you have such thick glasses when you have a very slight prescription?”
What’s Going On With Meta Glasses?
While the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses may be advertised as a way for people to take videos and photos without removing their phone from their pocket, some are concerned that they could be used for more nefarious purposes.
Already, numerous internet users have alleged that they’ve seen people wearing the glasses in places where they’d rather not be filmed. For example, one woman says that she caught a waxer wearing them before performing a Brazilian. Another woman alleged that a man struck up a conversation with her at the airport—only for her to later find a video of their interaction filmed via his Meta glasses posted online.
Is This Even Legal?
If the man truly was recording, he may be legally protected to do so. Ohio is a one-party consent state, meaning that only one person involved in the interaction has to know the recording is happening in order for it to be legal. In general, this “one-party” can refer to the person taking the video or making the audio recording.
However, there are many stipulations. First, one may not record another person when they would have the expectation of privacy. Second, in the state of Ohio, the recording must not be made for an illegal purpose. For example, if one is recording another person for the purposes of blackmail or harassment, they are not legally protected.
Even if the glasses are legal now, that doesn’t mean that they always will be. The European Union has brought up privacy concerns about the glasses, and some hospitality groups, such as MSC Cruises, have specifically banned their use on-property.
For now, the TikToker is simply content to be out of this situation—though what the man planned to do with the alleged video is anyone’s guess.
