The clip, which has amassed 3.3 million views, includes on-screen text that reads: “Bro, why TF did my brand new Lulu leggings just come off on my lint roller?”

TikTok user Avalyn (@avalynsactualspam) then panned the camera to her lint roller, which was imprinted with faint polka dots that matched those on the leggings, which were also visible.

As this happened, a foreboding sound played in the background.

In the TikTok description, she added: “Paid $98 for these BTW.”

What did commenters think?

Some commenters were unsympathetic, with one writing, “That’s what you get for willingly spending 98 dollars on one pair of leggings.”

A second echoed, “The first mistake was getting those to begin with.”

A third wrote, “This is why you don’t buy expensive low-quality clothing.”

While a fourth claimed, “I used to work at a thrift store and Lululemon is the cheapest quality out of all athletic brands.”

Other commenters gave explanations as to why this was happening, with a fifth noting, “It’s because more lint is sticking to the polka dots due to the extra fabric and lifted imprint.”

Meanwhile, a former Lululemon worker claimed that this happened because it was a “flocked” pattern. “Flocking is a way of creating texture on a garment where they basically put down glue and sprinkle fibres on top of it,” they explained. “So, when you lint roll, you’re pulling the fibres off. Lulu came out with a whole line of flocked clothing. It’s not my favorite because I think it’s a poor quality, unfortunately.”

Is Lululemon declining in quality?

Over on the r/lululemon subreddit, other customers are also sharing their despair over the decline of Lululemon products.

“I haven’t been in a few years and tried on the Nulu as well as some Aligns, and they were so unflattering, and the fabric felt so cheap and thin,” one shared. “Am I crazy? I also notice a majority of their products are just polyester. I’m sorry, but why are we spending $300 on polyester clothes when you can buy the same exact thing at Ross or Old Navy?”

A second customer claimed that, after buying multiple men’s ABC joggers and trying them on, they “felt a difference in the stretch and drawstring.”

“After looking closer, [I] realized the composition of the pant is different when comparing,” they added.

However, a third Redditor shared a reason why exactly this so-called quality decline is happening. They pointed to a 2021 post by Lululemon corporate, in which the company announced that it aims to reduce “forever chemicals” (PFAS) in its synthetic fabrics by 2024.

The Redditor also noted that Lululemon also committed to using more sustainable materials. While this may well explain the change in quality, The Mary Sue was unable to independently verify that this is truly the case.
