Katy Perry misses the point over criticism of her Blue Origin trip

Katy Perry took people criticizing her “space” adventure and decided it was best to hate on those angry. The space adventure that helped to rip a hole in the ozone layer and was a joyride for rich women that they all paraded as some kind of win for feminism.
Perry’s fans decided to rent billboard space in Times Square to celebrate the artist. Oh look, another way to waste money that could be used to benefit others instead! In the comments, Perry shared her love for her fans, writing “I’m so grateful for you guys. We’re in this beautiful and wild journey together. I can continue to remain true to myself, heart open and honest especially because of our bond. I love you guys and have grown up together with you and am so excited to see you all over the world this year!”
But she went on to talk about how she knows who she is and that she’s okay and knows what is “important” to her. But then Perry made it clear that she did not see the criticism against her and take it to heart. She said that the “online world” was trying to turn her into a “human Piñata” and wrote “I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.”
Perry praised her fans and that’s fine and she talked about how seeing them at her concerts and “feeling” their warmth is what makes it worth it. “I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but… I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level UNLOCKS.”
Okay but Katy Perry…you went on a joyride to space
On the one hand, I am sure that she means that people being mean to her isn’t a new thing. In this case though, the criticism of Perry wasn’t exactly unwarranted. They tried to sell the Blue Origin flight as something that little girls could look up to. What? Being rich? But more than that, you’re a celebrity! People will have something to say about you.
The fact that Perry is discounting those angry at her online and acting as if we’re not right to call this out is…well, not surprising given the fact that she flew to space for a second and then acted like it was a win for women everywhere. Perry’s fans wasting money on billboard is right in the same vein as the rest of this mess but I guess everyone is just missing the point of the online criticism of Perry.
What we have learned through this entire situation is that Perry hasn’t learned anything from this. And so if she ends up back in space on an expensive, climate changing trip, don’t be surprised.
