Okay, We’ll Bite: What Is Going on with This Jim Carrey Situation?

For decades, Jim Carrey has been delivering transformative and larger-than-life performances… but the latest story around him is becoming stranger than fiction.
Late last week, videos of Carrey on the red carpet for the César Awards, which are France’s equivalent of the Academy Awards, quickly went viral online. The ceremony, which was held on February 26th, included a presentation of an honorary César Award to Carrey, which he accepted alongside his family and his partner, South Korean actress and artist Min Ah.
But the award itself was overshadowed by a different topic: Carrey’s physical appearance. Some found that the actor, who has not been seen publicly since helping induct Soundgarden into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November of 2025, looked uncanny in videos posted from the red carpet. Fans worried about his health, and wondered if he had gotten plastic surgery in the time since last being seen in public.
But some took it even further, speculating that these videos from the César Awards weren’t of Carrey at all. The color of Carrey’s eyes in the video were a specific subject of scrutiny, although that could be explained as a result of the bright lighting on the red carpet. Conspiracy theories began to fly that Carrey had been replaced by a clone of himself (something that has already exacerbated the bizarre Selena Gomez/Geena Davis conspiracy theory that has recently gained traction online), or that this was at very least someone else intentionally impersonating Carrey.
Social media posts from makeup artist and drag queen Alexis Stone seemed to fuel the latter theory, insinuating that he had used elaborate prosthetics to impersonate Carrey at the event. Given the fact that Stone has become known for elaborate and unsettling prosthetic makeup, this didn’t seem too far-fetched.
It also didn’t seem out of the realm of possibility that Carrey would go along with a stunt like that, given his own history of getting very, very lost in his impersonation of Andy Kaufman for the 1999 movie Man on the Moon. Carrey even previously revealed on a decades-old appearance on Late Night With David Letterman that: “I’ve done this a few times now and that is to use a decoy. Using a decoy — it sounds so ridiculous but it works like a charm … a Jim Carrey double. I send him off in one direction, he sucks all the press in that direction, and I just have my day.”
But even then, Stone’s own photo of the Mission: Impossible-esque prosthetic mask is being accused of being AI-generated, and some have wondered if he is just latching onto the chatter online about Carrey.
So, What’s the Truth?
For the time being, it seems like there is no hoax or body double or clone. Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, addressed the conspiracy theories in a statement to Variety, confirming that Carrey had been preparing for his appearance for several months.
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” Caulier revealed. “From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” Caulier said. “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”
“For me, [his appearance is] a non-issue,” Caulier continued. “I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”
Carrey’s longtime publicist, Marleah Leslie, shut things down much more succinctly in a separate statement to People, saying: “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award.”
Obviously, the Internet is going to react however it reacts… but the immediate jump to body double or clone is something of a slippery slope, especially when talking about a public figure’s appearance. Given the way people scrutinized Chadwick Boseman’s appearance in the months prior to his sudden death, completely unaware of the fact that he was secretly battling cancer, any uproar about an actor not “looking like themselves” is going to sit a little oddly for me, especially when it is taken even further to these bizarre extremes. For now, it sounds like we can trust that that was, in fact, Carrey… and speculate about whether or not he’ll be returning in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
