A woman on TikTok says she experienced one of the most stressful moments she’s ever had on a flight after a passenger suddenly demanded to get off the plane moments before takeoff.

Family TikTok account @twinssquared2 posted a clip of the situation unfolding from their seats while on a JetBlue flight. In the video, which got over 2.8 million views, the creator sits on the plane looking concerned as the text overlay explains what had just happened.

“Our plane pushed back, and someone suddenly wanted off of it and insisted he had no luggage with him,” the overlay reads.

What Happened on this JetBlue Flight?

In a separate video explaining the situation, the creator said the incident began shortly after passengers had already boarded and the plane started taxiing.

“OK, story time on the most anxious and stressed I’ve ever been on an airplane ever,” she begins.

According to her, everything initially seemed normal. “We boarded the plane. Everything was fine, dandy,” she says. “We started to push back to taxi to our runway.”

Then a passenger asks to leave. “All of a sudden, the guy insists he needs off the flight,” she says.

From her seat near the back of the plane, she says she saw the passenger speaking with a flight attendant as the aircraft turned around and headed back to the gate.

“I see this guy talking to the flight attendant, and they’re kind of going back and forth,” she explains. “We’re toward the back of the plane, so I couldn’t hear them.”

Eventually, the plane returned to the gate, and the passenger was allowed to leave. “They open the doors, and he gets off the flight,” she says.

The Passenger Claimed He Had No Luggage

After the man left the plane, the TikToker says she overheard flight attendants discussing what had happened.

According to her, the passenger claimed he had a family emergency and urgently needed to leave the flight.

However, something about the situation made other passengers uneasy.

“He insisted that he had no carry-on, no backpack, nothing, no luggage on this flight,” she says. “He just walked onto the flight and decided he needed to get off of it,” she recalls.

That detail immediately raised concerns for her and other passengers.

“So obviously, very concerned about him leaving something on the plane that would be obviously very dangerous,” she says.

According to the TikToker, the pilot then addressed the situation over the intercom.

“They had to do a bunch of extra security measures,” she says.

Roughly 15 to 20 minutes later, the crew made another announcement.

“They asked us to deplane and take all of your belongings with you,” she explains. “They had to do another full sweep of the aircraft.”

JetBlue Passengers Waited More Than an Hour

According to the creator, everyone was off the plane for more than an hour while authorities performed a security sweep.

She claims multiple agencies inspected the aircraft before passengers were eventually allowed to reboard.

“I did hear a guy talking about how he thought this guy was definitely out of it for whatever reason,” she says, referring to the passenger who had left earlier.

Ultimately, she says she never learned exactly what caused the man to abruptly leave the flight.

“I’m not sure exactly what happened,” she says.

However, she said she was relieved that JetBlue chose to take extra precautions before allowing the plane to depart.

“Because I was very stressed about going into the air without taking those extra security measures,” she says.

In the comments section, other passengers shared either witnessing this exact situation or being the cause of it.

“Sooo my uncle did this like a year post 9/11 and held up the ENTIRE airport for about 4 hours while they questioned him,” one user shared. “He was banned from that airport and airline.”

“In 2009 my mechanic dad pulled me and him off a plane because he heard a noise he didn’t like and didn’t want us flying over the Atlantic in it,” another wrote. “The flight ended up turning around after take off due to mechanical issues. Fun fact.”

“I did this once,” said a third. “The plane had been fully boarded and I started to have a panic attack while we were still at the gate. It was my first time flying alone. I always wondered what people were thinking when I got off the plane.”

What Happens if a Passenger Wants to Exit Right Before Takeoff?

One Reddit user asked this very question less than a month ago at the time of writing on the subreddit r/fearofflying.

A verified pilot account responded, writing that a plane won’t take off until everyone is strapped to their seat. If someone is out of their seat and refuses to sit back down, flight attendants will attempt to fix the issue. “It’s then a case of whether the situation in the cabin can be resolved and if it can’t, it will mean a taxi back to the gate as there is no other way to offload a passenger at that point,” they wrote.

There are certain legitimate reasons why a plane might stop and let out a passenger, such as a medical emergency, the pilot explained.

“And whilst the cabin crew are well trained to deal with medical emergencies, on the ground we’ll never knowingly take them into the air,” they stated.
