‘It was never about the drugs’: JD Vance’s first thought is ‘control’ and not welfare when speaking about the USA’s plans for Venezuela

On January 3, 2026, the United States, under the orders of Donald Trump, conducted a raid in Venezuela, resulting in the abduction of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump, who considers Maduro to be a narcoterrorist, has since then expressed his desire to subject Maduro to the due process of United States law and punish him for his alleged crimes.
After being captured by the United States forces, Nicolás Maduro is no longer the president of Venezuela, and no one is currently serving in his position. Ongoing discussions are taking place regarding who might succeed him, with the United States possibly having a say in the matter. Donald Trump has made it clear that he plans to “run” Venezuela for now until a seamless transition of power can be achieved. In the meantime, he has also been vocal about wanting to explore Venezuela’s rich oil reserves, which he claims have been left untapped by the local population. He wishes to work alongside Venezuelans to ensure that the American people also benefit from these resources. Trump’s statements about utilising Venezuela’s oil have led many to believe that his kidnapping of Maduro was not merely about combating terrorism or liberating Venezuelans from a dictator, but rather a strategic move to seize control of Venezuelan oil.
Now, even JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, is making similar remarks about Venezuela, leading many to believe that the abduction of the Venezuelan people was never meant to assist them but to help Americans gain access to their oil and overall control of their country. During an interview on Jesse Watters Primetime, when JD Vance was asked how the U.S. removing a ‘dictator’ from Venezuela (referring to Maduro) would benefit the “average” American, Vance explained the U.S.’s exploitation tactics, one of which involved the ability to “control” the “incredible” natural resources of Venezuela, allowing the U.S. to exert “leverage” over its enemies. He also mentioned that if America needed “low-cost” and “high-quality” energy, it would always have access to it. Finally, he stated that the U.S. gaining control in Venezuela is a demonstration of the American military’s excellence, which will make others “afraid” to challenge America in the future. His exact words in this context were:
First of all, what it means is we are going to be able to control the incredible natural resources of Venezuela, which is good for America in a few ways. Number one, it allows us to put leverage on our enemies. Number two, it makes sure that if Americans need high-quality, low-cost power, we will always gonna have access to it. And the third thing is it does demonstrate American military excellence, which makes people afraid to cross us in the future.”
JD Vance’s comments about Venezuela have caused people to worry, with many believing that America will soon start warring with foreign nations.
