Some marriages are built on love, trust, and communication. Others? Apparently held together by a single, aggressively elusive jar of garlic powder.

In a TikTok that has people side-eyeing a marriage hard, one woman shared the exact moment her husband went from “quick kitchen question” to “why are you like this?” Her response was calm. His? Not exactly Food Network-friendly. Now, viewers are wondering why a wife would tolerate this type of husband.

Can Men Not Find Things?

As a mom, Jenna (@jennalabarre) was having a normal day. That is, until 11pm hits and she gets a random text message from her husband. Her retelling of the story already has 780,000 views and over 1,000 comments. Her caption hints at the nature of the exchange, saying, “Honestly, my bad for forgetting that men just don’t look at all and expect things to magically pop up right in front of them.”

It’s not a new phenomenon, seeing as The Mary Sue has covered stories surrounding the same idea. In one, a man couldn’t find the coffee creamer his wife sent him to the store for, complete with a picture of it being in front of him, and he still saying there aren’t any.

In another, the man was overconfident, taunting his girlfriend and being adamant that a gas station didn’t have any Chex Mix because he had already looked. She left the store with two bags. As such, women on the internet complain about this confounding conundrum.

What Did Jenna’s Husband Say?

Searching skills aside, tone and reaction play a big part. In the previous stories, the husband from the former was apologetic, while the latter was arrogant. Jenna’s husband? Furious. She starts the story by saying her husband texted her at 11:30pm to ask if they had garlic powder.

Apparently, he has “never cooked a day in his life.” She can’t possibly imagine what he needs it for. Then she says, “because if I asked what he was up to every time he did or said something questionable, it would have sent me into psychosis now.” So, she simply replies that it’s in their spice cabinet.

As she says this, Jenna gestures to the said cabinet behind her for her viewers, complete with racks full of different spices. She said he replied, “Am I just missing it?” Unsure of what to say, Jenna chooses the straightforward route and responds, “I don’t know, it says garlic powder on it.”

Again, she emphasizes that that was the only thing she could think of to say. Somehow, it enrages him, and his response is “[expletive] you.” She ends the video with a series of rhetorical questions, wondering if he knew how to read or how else she could have possibly answered.

A Garlic Powder Update

A lot of viewers were questioning if the household had any garlic powder to begin with. In a follow-up video, Jenna shows the container in their spice rack and notes that the powder is almost finished. Interestingly, she says she used it a couple of days before the entire exchange, and it was a quarter full. Her theory is that he used it and accidentally put too much. She simply says she’ll have to add it to the grocery list.

In another clip, Jenna rants about how the whole “spice rack” ordeal shows how misogynistic society is. “My husband can’t find a spice on a spice rack,” she complains, “and then I get people telling me, ‘well, why isn’t it in alphabetical order?… This is on you, you should have organized it better.’”

Jenna then vehemently questions why organizing it must be her job to do simply because she’s a woman. She ends the clip saying this might be her “crash out.”

‘Do you even like each other?’

Naturally, most of TikTok took this clip as an opportunity to question Jenna’s relationship. A comment with almost 6,000 likes says, “Why are you letting him talk to you like that? Serious question.”

A second viewer says, “Life is too short. Don’t waste it with someone you hate.”

Others praise their own relationships or lack thereof. “Every day I find a new, very sad reason to appreciate my husband on this app, and today it is that he can find the garlic powder independently,” says one viewer.

Another comment with 4,600 likes chimes in, “Hearing married people talk about their relationships just makes me feel more secure being single and living alone in my peace.”

Lastly, one viewer asks, “Do you even like each other?”
