How exactly does a film that isn’t even out yet get nominated for “Box Office Achievement” at the Golden Globes?

The 83rd Golden Globes nominees were announced and, for the most part, weren’t that surprising. A lot of the award conversation was spot on and so it then is a bit of a shock to see the line-up for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. There was no mention of Superman, no surprise shout out to movies that came out this year. Instead, Avatar: Fire and Ash was included for…what? Presale tickets?

Now this isn’t a knock on the film or what might happen when Fire and Ash is released. More than anything, it is embarrassing to award a movie a “Box Office Achievement” nomination before you even see what happens.

A lot of the award conversation surrounding Avatar: Fire and Ash has felt like people just assuming the movie is going to be one thing or another. Most everyone put Fire and Ash into the Best Picture conversation long before anyone had seen the movie. So how exactly does it work in this case?

Yes, James Cameron’s movies do tend to do well at the box office but we just don’t know what is going to happen! The nomination is just that though: A guess. The rules state movies released after Nov. 22 can still be nominated in that category despite not knowing what the outcome of their run will be.

So sure, I guess it is possible and fine to have Avatar: Fire and Ash there but it is weird how people continue to just guess that the movie will be included in these things. When other great films could have taken that spot!
