Woman matches on Hinge. Then he realizes she lives in the same building: ‘Those 4 am texts are the WORST’

woman shares strange dating app experience (l) woman using hinge app (r)

A woman might move after she realized a Hinge match wasn’t going to work out. That may seem like an overreaction, but it actually might not be. That’s because the Hinge match just happens to live in the same apartment complex, severely complicating the situation and making every elevator ride awkward for the two.

It started when TikTok user L (@okbishhhh) matched with a man who she knew lived in her apartment complex. Both she and her match played cool, acting like they didn’t know each other from occasional elevator rides and a few sparse sightings.

L said she made a mistake when she let him know she noticed that he lived a few doors down. Then, things didn’t work out, making their short elevator rides feel strained. She posted to TikTok to ask her audience what she should do in the situation. Should she leave the situation alone and live through the awkwardness, or should she make an Irish exit when she gets a chance?

What happened with her Hinge match?

L matched with a man on Hinge that she knew she had seen a few times before. She remembered him from the elevator in her apartment complex and a few other areas. But she had never gotten properly acquainted with her neighbor. At first, she played it cool with the man and chatted for a while. But then, she stopped responding.

Then, they started running into each other more often. L thought that the man would message her, but he never did. So, she took matters into her own hands.  On New Year’s, L made the decision to message the man and let him know that she noticed their mutual proximity. She let him know that she didn’t want to beat around the bush.

So, the man tried to schedule a brunch date at roughly 1:30 p.m. He sent a text to her early in the morning at 4:15 a.m, but she wasn’t up until 1:15 p.m. that day. That immediately told her “everything [she] needed to know.”

Still, she decided to chat with him a little bit more to see if there was a connection. Spoiler: there wasn’t. L noticed that they had completely different communication styles. She responded 12 hours after he sent a text, which led him to sever the connection.

“ He goes, ‘This isn’t up for debate. We have different communication styles. I wish you the best,'” L recounted. “So I’m just like, ‘OK, and now we’re gonna see each other in the elevator, and that’s gonna be just so awkward.”

For that reason, L wanted to get out of the apartment complex entirely. She saw the situation as a bit too uncomfortable for her tastes.

Is awkwardness a reason to move apartments?

Awkwardness aside, both parties agreed to cut off their relationship, making it a pretty simple and straightforward ‘uncoupling.’ For that reason, she might be able to survive the awkwardness and let the possible match fade into obscurity if she decides to stay in the complex.

There are situations, though, where women need to break their leases due to ex-flames. While landlords are required to ensure rentals meet a certain safety standard, they can’t necessarily predict situations where partners, exes, or even previous dating options show up. Some landlords allow for premature lease termination for extenuating circumstances, but others may require documentation for lease termination.

L indicated that she’s thinking about moving because she’d see him all of the time, and while not a severe split, it can still feel uncomfortable to constantly be around a failed match.

Other commenters had similar experiences, sharing the ways they’d have to circumnavigate ex-partners and former dates. “lol I had to start taking the stairs in my high rise because of my dating habits,” said one viewer.

Another humorously added, “You are going to see him non stop now, and I am just here with my popcorn.”
