Everyone Wants to Know: Who Was the DJ at the Golden Globes?
When everyone tuned in to the Golden Globes this year, they expected emotional acceptance speeches, fun bits from host Nikki Glaser, and stars! What they probably didn’t expect was someone having a little too much fun with the music of the ceremony.
Fans know that at an award ceremony, music is typically played during the commercial breaks, when people are announced as presenters, and to signal to a winner that their time is up for their speeches. But more often than not, the music is either geared towards the ceremony itself or to the presenters/winners. Not whatever song people think is fun.
The tone of the ceremony ended up being a Forever 21 in 2008 by the end of it. Stellan Skarsgård literally walked up to “Yeah” by Usher. If you know anything about Sentimental Value, you know that that choice makes no sense. Honestly, with the way the ceremony was going, they should have played “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.
It wasn’t just that they played random songs. Sometimes, it did work. Like when Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie came out to present and the music aggressively cut to Chappelle Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.” But for the most part, someone would have an emotional speech and then the tonal switch to the music would ruin the moment.
Did I need to hear “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” right after Jessie Buckley’s speech for Hamnet? No! But that’s what happened. And as many pointed out, the songs were incredibly “millennial.” Sorry to my fellow millennials but you can tell by the songs we choose that we’re of our generation.
I truly was waiting for a Green Day song to play someone out by the end! It was just random and weird. And does anyone know where I can get in contact with the DJ for all my future party needs?
