Godzilla Is Remaking ‘The Odyssey’ Before Christopher Nolan Can

Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey is undeniably one of the most-anticipated movies of this year, as people eagerly await to see his unique take on Homer’s iconic epic. But as it turns out, Nolan’s film won’t be the only brand-new interpretation of the classic to arrive this summer.

This week, IDW Publishing announced the next miniseries for Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents, an anthology that places the beloved kaiju within the worlds of classic works. Godzilla’s The Odyssey, written by Frank Tieri with art by Ilias Kyriazis, will be released on June 10th, just in time for Nolan’s The Odyssey on July 17th.

The Odyssey is hands down one of the greatest stories ever told in history,” Tieri said in a statement when the book was announced (via The Beat). “I mean, it has everything… the Trojan War, vicious sea monsters, angry gods, enchanting sirens, devious witches, a cyclops with vision problems, etc. But there is one thing clearly missing… and that’s Godzilla. After all, Godzilla makes every story better, even this one, am I right?”

The one-shot comic promises to deliver more kaiju than just the titular Godzilla, with Tieri revealing that “part of the fun of this book was jamming as many familiar faces from the Godzilla-verse in there, so plan on seeing Rodan, Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Destoroyah, and plenty of others you won’t see coming. Toss out everything you know about Greek history and come join us on our GODyssey, if you will. Trust me… you won’t be sorry. (Though Odysseus might be, granted.)”

Under Tom Scioli, the Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre title previously tackled the likes of The Great Gatsby, The Time Machine, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes in a three-issue miniseries. It then relaunched as an anthology, Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents, with the gloriously-named Romeo & Juliet & Godzilla this spring. Godzilla’s The Odyssey will also feature a backup story written and illustrated by Scioli, “Godzilla vs. Robin Hood.”

What Is The Odyssey About?

According to Universal’s official description for the film, Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The film is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan for their company, Syncopy. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.

“I mean, it truly contains all stories,” Nolan explained to Empire Magazine in an interview late last year. “As a filmmaker, you’re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before. And what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with — Ray Harryhausen movies and other things — I’d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.”

Godzilla’s The Odyssey will be released wherever comics are sold on Wednesday, June 10th. It will then be followed by Nolan’s The Odyssey, which will arrive in theaters on Friday, July 17th.
