‘He literally caught me off guard’: Man takes girlfriend to mountaintop to propose. She said yes—but not before ‘ruining’ it

A couple on TikTok just got engaged! But, not before a slight bump in the road, or a fall during the proposal.

TikTok user Annie (@applesnbananas) and her longtime partner went hiking. What Annie didn’t know, though, was that her partner had been planning a proposal on the trail. He had even set up a camera on the trail to capture the moment. While making their way up a steep hill, the TikToker decided to “star jump.” That is, to jump in the air spread out like a starfish.

Behind her, her boyfriend was getting down on one knee. When she turned to see him, she realized, falling backward and saying, “Oh my god,” as he held the ring.

“Are you [expletive] kidding?” She asked. Then, the couple started laughing uncontrollably.

Since posting the clip, the video has garnered over 11 million views, with thousands of people chiming in. Madison Humphrey, a popular TikTok content creator and frequent skit maker, even reposted the video, hinting that she would make a parody of the situation.

So, was this a “ruined” proposal? Or, just a funny story that ended up getting a massive amount of attention online?

The proposal—truly ‘ruined,’ or just unique?

Annie seemed somewhat embarrassed by the fact that she “star-jumped” right before an incredibly important moment, but viewers reminded her that it would be an incredibly funny story down the line once she was married.

“Everything you just did in this proposal is why he’s asking anyway,” one viewer confirmed.

Another added, “Girl you made that moment you didn’t ruin it.”

Indeed, the general tone of the video doesn’t point toward the “star jump” being particularly awful, cringe, or embarrassing. Rather, it was unexpected and made the situation more unique for them.

“Based only on what I’ve seen in this video, I actually think this was the most appropriate proposal for you,” another viewer added, noticing the way the couple organically took in the moment and let it pass.

Madison Humphrey enters the conversation

Humphrey, a frequent parody maker who makes content about most of the biggest moments on TikTok, left a comment on the video. She mentioned that she sent Annie a message, which presumably asks for permission to create a skit based on the content.

Humphrey frequently parodies humorous, ironic, and playful content. One of her most famous skits parodied a couple who decided to have their wedding at a waterpark. In it, Humphrey is seen wearing a wedding dress and walking into a waterpark, fit with a costumed penguin and a real wedding cake.

The fact that Humphrey’s skits poke fun at “couples comedy” or at times cringe content on TikTok is one reason why Humphrey has 4.7 million followers on TikTok. Often, she’s one of the first TikTok content creators to comment on a post and request to create content based on it. That’s why many TIkTokers post, “here before Madison Humphrey comments,” or feel joy if they see “the original” post first.

Humphrey did make a skit based on the post, which was posted four days after Annie’s original video.
