FX’s ‘Love Story’ Has Fans Talking. And They Know What Stories They Want to See Next.

In a way, it has been impossible to avoid the chatter around FX’s Love Story. The new anthology series, which is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, has taken the American Story branding into a whole new territory, trading scares and true-crime fodder for unabashed romance.

The first season of Love Story is chronicling the journey of John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, and making stars out of its lead actors Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon in the process. The show still has more than half of its episodes left in its run, but fans are already setting their sights on what the future could hold.

A second season of Love Story has yet to be officially greenlit… but the runaway success of the show hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about the subjects of potential future seasons. The prompt has become a bit of a meme on social media, with people sharing their picks for the larger-than-life famous couples who could fill another season worth of episodes.

One tweet from @booksandmulder throws out a few options: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III, X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and Olympic figure skating duo Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Another from @haevong also suggests Taylor and Burton and Kelly and Rainier, as well as David Bowie and Iman, and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

Our own editor-in-chief, Rachel Leishman, also suggested Bowie and Iman and Nicks and Buckingham, as well as Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston and Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. I, personally, would throw Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward and Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy into the ring… although finding someone to nail Hepburn’s unique speech patterns might be a tall order.

Will any of these become future Love Story seasons? Only time will tell… but ultimately, I love the fact that the show has people talking about (and celebrating) some of the tangible ways that romance has impacted our popular culture. In a world where sex scenes and romance are being viewed as superfluous onscreen, this level of positivity and swooning is delightful to see.

When Will Love Story Season 1 End?

At the time of this writing, Love Story still has five of its nine episodes left to air, culminating with a currently-untitled finale that will debut on Hulu on March 26th. That means we have over a month left of chatter around the show… and its two leads.

“From the beginning, Ryan really wanted A Star Is Born — two unknowns,” executive producer Brad Simpson prevously explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I remember him saying to me, “I want to have a billboard on the Sunset Strip that looks like a Herb Ritts photograph that is two beautiful people you have no pre-existing association with.” Sarah does have Stereophonic and I Know What You Did Last Summer, but he didn’t want to bring the baggage of what that was. So we were on a real star search from the beginning and I think that worked to our favor because it’s not, “Look at how X actors transform themselves.” You’re going to meet these people for the first time as JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.”

“They just looked at each other and the whole room was like, “This is what we’ve been waiting for,”” series creator and executive producer Connor Hines explained in the same interview. “It’s not really something you can calculate or look for. It just has to happen in the room. And it was instantaneous. I think they both knew it too in that moment, which made it that much better.”

New episodes of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette debut on Thursdays exclusively on Hulu.
