Dr. Oz has a simple solution for reducing health insurance costs: just don’t get sick

If you refresh your Instagram feed, you’ll come across at least a dozen influencers making unfounded claims about health and overall wellness. While it might be somewhat acceptable (though it really shouldn’t be) for someone without a medical degree to offer such advice or make these assertions, it is completely unacceptable for someone who has devoted years to medical science and serves as the Administrator for the Centres for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the United States.
Recently, during an appearance on Fox News, Dr. Mehmet Oz, a staunch supporter of Trump known for promoting fads and quick fixes, stated that being “obese is a problem.” He also asserted that obesity is a major factor driving healthcare costs in America, accounting for about a quarter of healthcare expenses, before emphasising that if people wanted to lower healthcare costs, they needed to “get healthy” (what a genius idea). He then took out some Non-MAHA OB snacks from beneath the table and advised the FOX News reporter against eating them while endorsing MAHA food items, insisting that they are the healthier choice.
Dr. Oz’s remarks about how Americans should cut healthcare costs during his recent Fox News segment have drawn comparisons to popular internet jokes, like those suggesting that people with depression should simply drink more water to alleviate their symptoms. One user on X (formerly Twitter), while commenting on the situation, wrote:
“How does he explain seemingly healthy people, like athletes, getting diseases like cancer? People get sick for various reasons. Soon he will be hawking some magical cure for wellness, and since Trump’s administration disregards ethics, he will be free to do it!”
Another individual on the platform highlighted:
“Oh, of course, the Wizard of Oz himself is here to save America’s healthcare. Just click your heels together, exercise 20 minutes a day, and voilà, premiums magically drop. Forget systemic problems, forget access, forget actual medicine, if you get sick, that’s on you. Dr. Oz, pulling policy out of a storybook, waving a wand of smoke and mirrors, and expecting applause from the Emerald City. Reality called. It’s laughing.”
Several others shared similar thoughts in their criticism of Dr.Oz.
