DC Announces New Series for Three Fan-Favorite Characters

DC is shining the spotlight on three surprising fan-favorites. Last week, the publisher announced two new ongoing books: The Fury of Firestorm, which will be written by Jeff Lemiere (Sweet Tooth, Absoute Flash) with art by Rafael De Latorre (The Penguin); and Zatanna, which will be written and illustrated by Jamal Campbell.

The first issue of The Fury of Firestorm will be released on April 1st, while the debut issue of Zatanna will arrive on April 29th. Zatanna and The Fury of Firestorm will be part of DC’s Next Level initiative, which is pairing fan-favorite characters with all-star creative teams. Other titles that have already been announced for the initiative include Batwoman by Greg Rucka and DaNi, Deathstroke: The Terminator by Tony Fleecs and Carmine di Giandomenico, and Lobo by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona.

In The Fury of Firestorm, the community of Bedford, Colorado, is a sleepy small town. The people say hello to their neighbors, attend town hall meetings, and root for the local high school football team on Friday nights. But this idyllic small town is thrown upside down when the Nuclear Man arrives and starts…experimenting. Firestorm has turned buildings to sand and people to glass with no remorse and no warning. But what exactly provoked Ronnie Raymond to commit this heinous act, and can anyone contain the fury that is Firestorm?

In Zatanna, Zatanna Zatara embarks on her greatest tour yet! As the newest and first Prime Magus in millennia, it is now Zatanna’s sworn responsibility to oversee and guide the world of magic. All eyes are on her. How will she accomplish this grand task? How will she shoulder this heaviest of responsibilities? How will she confront the horrors waiting in forgotten histories? With a wink, a flourish, and a whole lot of magic! The series will continue the events of Campbell’s six-issue miniseries for Zatanna, which launched in 2025 to critical and fan acclaim.

Bizarro!

Additionally, the publisher has also announced Bizarro: Year None, a four-issue limited series that will be part of DC’s adult-oriented Black Label imprint. It will be written by Kevin Smith (Green Arrow) and Eric Carrasco (Supergirl)with art by Nick Pitarra (The Manhattan Projects). The first issue will launch on April 1st.

Bizarro: Year None follows Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen and Clark Kent’s boss Perry White as they depart the Daily Planet for a strange adventure in outer space. Their journey leads them to a dimension that mirrors Metropolis in uncanny ways and reveres its legendary newspaper as an article of faith. As they unravel the mystery of this bizarre world, they confront the being behind it all. Is he a misguided Superman fan, an agent of pure chaos, or is he no one at all?

It’s worth mentioning: this sounds an awful lot like a storyline Smith had in mind for an episode of Strange Adventures, a live-action anthology series that Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions was developing under the previous DC regime for HBO Max. In the summer of 2022, Smith confirmed that the series was no longer moving forward at all, and shed more light on what his episode of it would have been. The story, which would have been directed by Smith and co-written by him and Carrasco, would have followed Jimmy, Perry, and Bizarro. He’d hoped to have Harrison Ford play Perry, with Nicolas Cage (who has a decades-long history of almost playing Superman) playing Bizarro. While that obviously never came to fruition, it is admirable that the story is being reworked into a comic, so that fans have a chance to experience it.
