We (and Cillian Murphy) could be so back: Is Jim returning to the ’28 Years Later’ franchise?

Cillian Murphy as Jim in '28 Days Later'

28 Days Later premiered in 2002 and it is, for many, their first introduction to Oscar winning actor Cillian Murphy. But that was also the first and last time that fans saw Jim, his bicycle courier character. Now, there may be hope we see Jim again.

In an exclusive to Deadline, it was revealed that a third 28 Years Later movie was heading our way prior to the release of Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, written by Alex Garland. And with the third film comes the news that Murphy is in talks to star as Jim once again.

The 28 Years Later movies have centered around a young boy named Spike (Alfie Williams). He leaves his home with his father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and returns to take him mother (Jodie Comer) to try to get her help. Along the way he meets a doctor (Ralph Fiennes) and then a cult of young people led by Jimmy (Jack O’Connell). That’s where we are heading into The Bone Temple.

Set to release in January of 2026, fans are excited to see the next installment to the franchise. And while 28 Weeks Later is the film many like to skip in the franchise, it is a series fans love. But we still miss characters like Jim. So a return from Murphy is a really big deal in general but especially if he is set to lead the next film in the franchise.

For now, we don’t know what will be of the next film but fans do have The Bone Temple to look forward to, with social reactions buzzing about the Nia DaCosta film. Either way, it is exciting that this franchise continues to find life at Sony and while we wait on news about Murphy, we do get to thrive in the knowledge of a third film coming our way.
