A South Carolina woman thought she would have a fun double-date night with her husband and another couple. Instead, she spent her entire evening waiting for food that never came.

Then, she made the decision to leave without paying.

In a viral TikTok video with 665,700 views, user Hannah Revels (@hannahhrevels) explained just how long she waited before ditching the restaurant and the bill.

She also explained why she would never return to the restaurant.

What happened at this restaurant?

According to Hannah, she went on a double date at an Isle Palms restaurant that she did not name. She expected a normal, busy Saturday evening wait for a table, which she did encounter.

After waiting an hour for a table, her party ordered drinks and appetizers, and were surprised when they came out from the kitchen pretty immediately.

However, they wouldn’t have that experience with the food they ordered.

That weekend, a television show called “Southern Charm” was allegedly shooting in the restaurant.

Hannah believed that’s why her party had a very long wait for their entrees. Eventually, they just wanted to leave without eating dinner.

“We said, ‘Can we just pay for the appetizers and the drinks?'” the woman explained.

Their server instead promised to comp their meals but urged them to still wait to receive the food.

When the food finally came, the server packed it up to go because it was already late.

That’s when Hannah and her party had had enough.

“We really don’t think that we should have to pay for this experience at all,” she finally told the server.

Ultimately, the woman and her party decided to dine and dash, but the restaurant did agree to comp their entire dining experience.

So clearly, she was well within her rights not to pay and leave.

What can happen to dine-and-dashers?

In this scenario, the woman’s server agreed to comp her party’s meal, so there was clearly no wrongdoing.

However, the act of consuming food at a restaurant and then leaving without paying the bill is in fact a crime.

In most states, leaving without paying is treated as “theft of services” and can carry significant consequences. The severity of the consequence depends on the value of the meal that was stolen.

For smaller tabs, dine-and-dashers could be hit with a misdemeanor, which can result in probation, fines, and up to one year in jail.

In instances with a larger party or for repeat offenders, the crime could be upgraded to a felony.

For Hannah and her party, there will certainly be no consequences for the refusal to pay.

Their biggest loss was suffering through the bad service, which they attributed to the show being filmed that night.

Nevertheless, she was still shocked that no one offered to make the experience right or invite them back for a free drink or appetizer.

Both the restaurant’s server and manager comped that meal, apologized profusely, but never extended any additional compensation.

@hannahhrevels this was by FAR the craziest experience everrrr!! safe to say we won’t be back? #storytime #crazyrestaurant #charlestonsc #isleofpalms #crazystory ♬ original sound – Hannah Revels

Commenters chime in

In the video’s comments section, many stood with Hannah and her decision not to pay for the food.

“I mean they probably shudda closed to the public but hey at least you got free food- I’ve had worst experiences, no production crew, and still paid for trash food lol ? so I think you won actually,” a user commented.

“Take away everything else that happened, if a place is being filmed it should be announced when you enter that there is a possibility you’ll be on camera. That is highly unprofessional cause a lot of people don’t want to be background actors in shows,” user Lottie wrote.

“HE DIDNT GIVE YALL GIFT CARDS!?” user Dosmania asked.
