Hulu renews my favorite weird comedy from Glen Powell and Michael Waldron and I’m grateful for it

Glen Powell and Michael Waldron brought fans probably one of the best new comedies this year and Hulu just gave it a season 2! So time to watch Glen Powell do some weird stuff all for the sake of football.

Chad Powers hit Hulu series stars Powell as Russ Holliday, a disgraced football star from the Oregon Ducks who, in a championship game, celebrated just a bit too early and lost his team the title. So to try and regain some of his ego, Russ takes on an alter ego that goes by the name of “Chad Powers” and tries out as a walk on for the South Georgia Catfish. And the rest is Chad Powers season 1 history.

While many feared that season 2 wouldn’t happen, Hulu and Disney announced today that the football comedy would be getting a follow-up season. And, if you watched the show, you know that’s a good thing seeing as the first season ends on a cliffhanger I need answered! More than that, it delights me that this weird little comedy is coming back because I miss when television leaned heavily into the fun of a comedy series. Yes, I do love that Glen Powell wore a water logged prosthetic cheek set!

Maybe it is my love of shows like Friday Night Lights and Parks and Recreation but there is something I cannot get enough of with Chad Powers. To me, the series is a perfect blend of those two shows. It has the football elements that make you want to cheer but it also is unhinged in the best of ways.

The series does go off the rails but it balances it so beautifully with a surprisingly grounded performance by Powell when it matters and with the budding friendship/romance of Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) and Russ/Chad, there is a lot fans want to see more of. As long as Danny (Frankie A. Rodriguez) sings more showtunes.

This news is amazing because I did hope we’d give Chad Powers another shot because we used to love making these kinds of comedy shows and maybe this will inspire others to actually make their weird ideas. Or, if not, at least I have more of Chad in my life.
