Usually, gym attire is just a matter of personal preference.

Some people like working out in a simple T-shirt and shorts. Other times, you’ll go to the gym and see a man doing pull-ups with no shirt and a pair of khakis. In short, it seems that people don’t really care what you wear to the gym—if you’re a guy.

In contrast, numerous women have shared stories about being approached at the gym about their outfits. Often, these women claim that they were told their outfit was “inappropriate” or “too revealing.” This is even the case if the look in question was just a simple sports bra and shorts.

Now, another woman is sharing her story of being questioned about her outfit. According to her, a Planet Fitness employee interrupted her to tell her what she was wearing was inappropriate—even though it was a standard workout look.

What Happened At This Planet Fitness?

In a video with over 16,000 views, TikTok user Hannah Rovsek (@hannahgballsdeep) says she left Planet Fitness after a manager allegedly told her “to put more clothes on” and that she “needed to cover [her] chest.”

According to Rovsek, she was working out when the manager stopped her “in front of everyone.”

“Not only is that low-key, like, sexual harassment to me, but it’s embarrassing,” Rovsek states. “I’m like, ‘Why are we talking about something that I can’t control in front of people working out at the same gym, and why are you telling me if I don’t have clothes on next time I can’t come in?’”

Rovsek says that, following this confrontation, she ended her workout. She then approached another staff member and asked for the manager’s information. According to Rovsek, the staff member told her that they, too, had issues with the manager, claiming that she had bad reviews and that she was causing them to consider quitting.

“I genuinely have never felt so uncomfortable ever in a gym,” Rovsek concludes. “I’m never going back to Planet Fitness.”

Does Planet Fitness Have Rules About Attire?

It’s true that Planet Fitness has rules about what one can and cannot wear.

According to the Planet Fitness website, one may not wear clothing with offensive messages. Clothing also cannot pose a health or safety risk. For example, someone wearing long jewelry may be told to remove it, as it could get caught in the equipment and cause injury. There are additional rules about wearing clothing that could damage equipment, such as jeans with “prominent grommets.”

In terms of “appropriateness,” however, the rules are fairly vague. The website simply states that “proper exercise attire is required and should cover the body appropriately.” As an example of appropriate coverage, the website lists that shorts must cover one’s glutes.

It would seem that the TikToker’s outfit, revealed in full in this post, meets these rules. That said, the website states that “Planet Fitness, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to determine what constitutes proper attire.” This means that, by the gym’s own terms, it can kick you out for your outfit if they deem it inappropriate, no matter what you’re wearing.

She’s Not The Only One

Over the years, multiple female Planet Fitness guests have shared stories about being asked to cover up, or being told that their outfits were inappropriate for the gym.

In one case, a woman says she was told her shirt was “too short”; she was wearing a t-shirt that was slightly cropped and leggings. Responding to this incident, a Planet Fitness spokesperson apologized and admitted that “a staff member enforced a company dress code policy in error.”

In another case, a pregnant woman was told that she could not wear a certain tank top because her pregnant belly was exposed. An employee offered her a large T-shirt and told her she could either cover up or leave. She was also allegedly told that her membership would be revoked if she did not cover up.

Commenters Are Mad

In the comments section, many users supported Rovsek.

“File a complaint,” stated a user. “nobody has a right to body shame you like that.”

“I thought planet fitness was all about being a judgment free zone wtf,” offered another. “I’d be so upset I’m sorry that happened.”

That said, some tried to offer an understanding of the gym’s point of view.

“I feel like she definitely should’ve told you in private, but she was probably addressing the situation because it may have been making other members feel uncomfortable,” shared a commenter. “just another perspective.”

Others claimed they had experienced something similar.

“They did the same thing to my friend who is a bodybuilder. He was wearing a sports tank top to look at his gains. They told him he wasn’t allowed to wear that at planet fitness,” alleged a further commenter. “Planet fitness is honestly the worst gym.”
