Salt Lake City Couple Receive Phone Call From the Police, but Ignore It. Then They Get Accused of Shoplifting from ShopCo
Falsely Accused

I’m nearly thirty years old, and I can confidently say I’ve had my fair share of experiences- good, bad, and everything in between. However, at this moment, I can’t recall anything truly wild that has happened to me that left a lasting impression or story that still comes up at dinner tables years after the incident.
But unlike me, @ladylionhair has a story about an experience from ten years ago involving her and her husband. The memory is so vivid that she’s uploading a video of herself recounting it without any edits. Just six days ago, @ladylionhair posted a video where she talked about how her husband was accused by the local police of shoplifting $3000 worth of items from ShopCo. It turned out, after much questioning and convincing, that the real culprit was someone who had slapped the number plate of a stolen Subaru on the back of @ladylionhair and her husband’s car, causing trouble for them over the shoplifting incident.
TikTok user @ladylionhair has a ShopCo-related story
As mentioned earlier, six days ago, @ladylionhair shared a video on her TikTok account where she talked about an incident from ten years ago that still haunts her.
Talking about the event, Caitlyn explains that she and her husband were driving somewhere when they received an automated call stating they were from the West Valley Sheriff’s Department and looking for John Garner. The caller also asked them to call back upon receiving the message. Both Caitlyn and her husband thought the call was a scam, but they received another similar call, which they also suspected was fake.
Later, Caitlyn’s husband received a call from his sister, who told him that the Sandy City Police Department was at their house looking for him. The sister didn’t give any details about why the authorities were there, but told Caitlyn and her husband to call the police. They did.
John called the police, and they immediately told him to come down to the station. When he asked why, they said they had it on camera that he shoplifted $3000 worth of items from ShopCo in West Valley. John, Caitlyn’s husband, protested, saying the person they saw wasn’t him. However, the police persisted, giving a detailed description of the Subaru he supposedly drove and even describing what his wife looked like. John confirmed that some details matched, but asked about the timeline of the incident. When they shared it, John said he wasn’t at the location or nearby when it happened and has receipts to prove it.
After some back and forth, it was revealed that the person who stole from ShopCo had access to a stolen Subaru, and, after the shoplifting, had attached the license plate of the stolen car to Caitlyn and John’s car, making it look like they were the ones responsible.
A lot of people opined about @ladylionhair’s story in the comments section
@ladylionhair’s video, where she shares the story of the time she and her husband were accused of shoplifting from ShopCo, has gained significant traction on TikTok. User @terraxoxx commented, “That’s actually insane.” User @monicadahlberg said, “That is wild!”
Many people had questions for Caitlyn about the situation. User @sailorsmommy asked, “How was there even $3000 worth of items at Shopco?” User @justreesingaround said, “Wait. They said they had video of you and your husband. In the store. This is wild! How did they explain that?”
What can one do if false allegations lead to an arrest?
According to David & Hoss PC (Attorneys at Law), if someone is falsely accused and arrested, they should take these steps to safeguard their rights:
- Remain composed and cooperate – Do not resist arrest, but refrain from speaking without legal representation.
- Request legal assistance – Immediately inform authorities that you want to speak with an attorney.
- Comply with court procedures – Attend all scheduled hearings and adhere to legal directives.
- Explore bail options – Your lawyer can assist in obtaining bail or reducing bond amounts.
- Stay off social media – Avoid posting about your case online, as such posts can be used against you.
