Billy Butcher/Karl Urban in 'The Boys'

‘The Boys’ Level the Playing Field in Season 3 Teaser Trailer

The boys are back, baby!

Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ just dropped the first teaser trailer for their upcoming third season, and it’s got everything we’ve come to expect from the darkly comic series. Explosions of blood and guts? Check. Aggressive sex? Check. Unbridled commercialism from Vought and the Seven? Check and check. But perhaps the biggest development is that the Boys have finally decided to level the playing field with the Supes by using Compound V. As we can see in the opening images, leader Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) dabbles in V with laser-eyed results.

There’s a lot going on in this trailer, so let’s get into it. Billy is now using Compound V, which follows a storyline from the comics. It’s a logical progression in his war with Vought, as you can only drive a speedboat into so many whales before you run out of speedboats and/or whales. But given what we know about the addictive nature of Compound V, this is bound to have some disastrous results for Billy. And he’s coming off of season two’s devastating finale, which saw him finally reunited with his estranged wife Becca (who he thought was dead) only to meet Becca’s son Ryan, who was fathered by Homelander. After Stormfront attacks Becca, Ryan blasts her with his laser eyes, accidentally killing Becca. It’s a twisted kind of irony that Compound V gives Billy the same superpowers that killed his beloved wife.

We also catch glimpses of what’s new at the Seven, which include a boy band-style musical act, and a riff on Kendall Jenner’s disastrous Pepsi commercial with A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) in the Jenner role hawking his new energy drink. We also get our first look at Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, a veteran member of the Seven who returns this season. Among the other images are classic plays on The Boys‘ signature weirdness, which include The Deep (Chace Crawford) making eyes at an octopus during sex, and Homelander (Antony Starr) living his milk fetish dream by milking a cow. Never change, The Boys.

Season 3 of The Boys premieres on June 3 on Amazon Prime.
