Imagine this: You’re sitting on your couch, family is making you watch a football game, and then, all of a sudden, you hear James Earl Jones and look up to see that The Lion King finally has a trailer. Well, that’s what happened to families everywhere on Thanksgiving when we were suddenly taken to Pride Rock without knowing it was happening.
Was there any kind of announcement? Not one that I had heard, so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard “all the land the light touches is our kingdom” and had to impolitely tell my family to shut up. (It was aggressive, and I may have said the F word to get my sister-in-law to pay attention to the television in time.)
Luckily, Disney released the trailer online for all our rewatching needs.
The best part? Mufasa. The minute James Earl Jones spoke, households got silent.

Here’s the thing: This is every ’90s kid’s favorite. Even if you have another “favorite” Disney movie, there’s something about The Lion King that will always bring a tear to your eye. If not, well then I don’t trust you. It’s such a huge part of the Disney canon, one that has led to a Broadway musical and countless sequels. In fact, the sequels to The Lion King are maybe the only Disney sequels worth watching.
Who at Disney in the early ’90s said, “What if we had lions acting out Shakespeare’s Hamlet”? We should all buy them a drink, because they gave us a masterpiece, and now we get to see it reimagined for a new generation—or just for the same generation that loved it before because, let’s be real, all of us are going to be there opening night, ready to watch Simba take on Scar and honor his father.
It’s safe to say that we’re all going to flock to the theaters the minute The Lion King is released so we can all cry about Mufasa, Simba, Nala, Scar, and the rest of our favorites. We have loved them for years and will continue to do so, especially because baby Simba is maybe the cutest thing ever.
