Things We Saw Today: Black Actors Sweep All Guest Categories at Creative Arts Emmys

Plus stuntwomen, Spider-Man, and more!

For the first time in Emmys history, black actors swept all four guest acting categories at the Creative Arts Emmys yesterday. The Guest Actor in a Drama winners were Samira Wiley for The Handmaid’s Tale and veteran character actor Ron Cephas Jones (Luke Cage) for This is Us. The Guest Actor in a Comedy awards went to comedian Katt Williams for Atlanta and the hilarious Tiffany Haddish for her gig hosting Saturday Night Live. Boo Boo Jeffries forever!

This year’s Emmy nominations feature a record 36 diverse acting nominees across all categories, a sign not only of television’s growing diversity but of the industry’s recognition of their talent. Here’s hoping we’ll see more of this at the Primetime Emmys on September 17th.

An pop culture journalist since 2012, her work has appeared on Autostraddle, AfterEllen, and more. Her beats include queer popular culture, film, television, republican clownery, and the unwavering belief that 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' is the greatest movie ever made. She currently resides in sunny Los Angeles, with her husband, 2 sons, and one poorly behaved rescue dog. She is a former roller derby girl and a black belt in Judo, so she is not to be trifled with.
