A live-action Swamp Thing series has been ordered for DC’s new streaming service, DC Universe. Based on the characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the one-hour drama series follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane, who returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus.

There she meets and falls in love with scientist Alec Holland, who suffers a terrible accident and is transformed into the powerful elemental being Swamp Thing. Abby and Swamp Thing must work together to defend the swamps from sinister forces intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes.

Mark Verheiden (Daredevil) and Gary Dauberman (It) will serve as writers and showrunners for the series. James Wan (Aquaman) will be joining the series as executive producer, and from his description it looks like we’ll be getting a soggy spiritual sibling to True Blood.

Swamp Thing will air exclusively on DC’s new streaming service, DC Universe, which is billed as a “first-of-its kind, immersive digital experience designed just for DC fans.” DC Universe has already announced orders for animated adult action comedy series Harley Quinn, which will be produced and written by Justin Halpern (Powerless), Patrick Schumacker (iZombie), and Dean Lorey (Arrested Development).

The streaming service has also picked up a live-action Teen Titans series, Titans, which features Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites) leading a team of superheroes including Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), Raven (Teagan Croft) and Starfire (Anna Diop). Greg Berlanti (literally all the things) is producing and writing the series, along with Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Discovery) and Geoff Johns (The Flash).

DC Universe will also be reviving the cult animated series Young Justice for a third season.A previously announced live-action Superman prequel, Metropolis, is being re-tooled for a later launch.
