Lady Parts Justice League, founded by Lizz Winstead, co-creator of The Daily Show, advocates for reproductive rights and gender equality with a side of unapologetic badassery. Winstead, who turns around phrases like “you can’t look at the world without worrying that it’s is going to drop its pants and start masturbating at you,” and her crew made a video that is a call to arms as to how you—yes, you— can get involved in the fight for bodily autonomy. Let’s fire up the Uterus signal.
The LPJL’s video is both a knowing parody of our superhero-steeped pop culture as well as an honest, important, and earnest look at the everyday heroes who are making a difference as they battle in ways large and small for reproductive rights and equality across genders.
From the escorts who ensure that patients can safely enter abortion clinics, to the skilled handywomen and men who keep things running smoothly, to the “advocats” who “use their voices to advocate for the rights and equality of all genders,” to the organizational wizards online and off who serve as the glue behind many efforts—what fast becomes apparent while watching is that there’s an important role for all of us to play.
The resulting message is an incredibly empowering one: “You too can offer the skills you have to make an extraordinary impact.” The video hits home that there’s a ton of us on the ground—without, perhaps, the medical knowledge to assist patients—who can still be immensely helpful in the fight for reproductive justice and gender equality. Together we can make real strides every day.
And remember: “Not all heroes wear capes. Most of them wear whatever the fuck they want.”
