Doug Jones’ Fish Man Makes Quite an Impression on Sally Hawkin’s Character in The Shape of Water Clip

The first reviews of Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water went online today, and they’re all calling the Cold War fairy-tale a beautiful masterpiece. The film centers around the relationship between Sally Hawkins’ Elisa and Doug Jones’ fish man character, who’s kept in a government laboratory for research.

While we won’t be able to watch The Shape of Water until December 8th, The Playlist recently shared a clip from the movie that includes many of the main characters. It appears to be the first encounter between Hawkins and Jones’ characters, where a mysterious tank is wheeled in as Michael Shannon’s Strickland, Michael Stuhlbarg’s Hoffstetler, and Octavia Spencer’s Zelda all look on in the sealed-off room. The dreamy blue of the industrial-looking interior feels distinctly del Toro, as are the horror elements lurking as a single fish hand (flipper? gill? I don’t know the proper terminology here) hits the container and shocks everyone present.

What a first impression, right? Are you looking forward to The Shape of Water?
