The similarities between our current world and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale have been a depressing and horrifying truth. However, it’s also an example of how powerful art has served as not only comfort but as a manual for resistance. In a new featurette, the team and cast of the Hulu adaptation talk about how the show is ultimately one that wants to foster hope.
The video gives a quick summary of the story, and introduces us to the grim world of Gilead. “It’s unquestionably a dark world,” says executive producer Bruce Miller, “but it’s not a dark show. The show is about perspective and not losing the hope of getting your life back.”
“I think the show does well of showing us how this reality can occur,” says Samira Wiley who plays Moira. “It seems far away but it also seems like it could be so close.” As the featurette includes shots of a dangerous police force and signs of protest that read “Women’s Choice,” this rings incredibly true.
