The new trailer for Luc Besson’s latest space opera picture, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, looks big and sparkly and distracting. Let’s go ahead and watch it.
That’s Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan, facing off against aliens in space wearing armor that looks surprisingly reminiscent of Mass Effect. Also, Delevingne’s skort-dress during that scene where she’s jumping from ship to ship looks adorable; you can tell it’s a skort because, well, there’s a lot of wind in that scene. Space opera women gotta stick with skorts. Or, power armor. Just a matter of practicality, really.
Also, yes, that’s Rihanna in this trailer. She’s not the lead part, but she did describe her role as a “big part,” so that’s nifty. I can’t tell at all from this trailer what the movie is actually about, but it looks campy and splashy and fun, and I liked Jupiter Ascending for all its goofiness, so this looks like an enjoyable romp to me.
If you do want to learn more about what it’s actually about, though, it’s based on a long-running series of French graphic novels titled Valérian and Laureline, which started coming out back in the 60s. So, there’s a big archive to pull from when it comes to story, but basically, our two leads are spec ops agents who fight threats in space. In the comics, sounds like there’s also time-travel involved.
