Get Acquainted With Maui in a New Moana TV Spot

This Thanksgiving will see the premiere of Moana, Disney’s newest offering in animated feature films. The holiday’s actually not too far away (three months!), and the slow burn of trailer releases is beginning to pick up. This minute-long TV spot popped up during last night’s Olympics coverage, and offered a really great look at Maui, one of the film’s heroes. Voiced by Dwayne Johnson, the most electrifying man in Disney entertainment, the demi-god Maui is shown here in his full transforming, animated tattoo-awesomeness. Maui’s also joined by the movie’s titular heroine, Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho.

The tone of this TV spot is definitely a departure from its Japanese trailer counterpart, focusing more on the thrilling moments awaiting our heroes in the film. I think more than anything else, I’m super intrigued by Maui’s animated tattoos. As someone who’s got more than a few of her own, I’d really love one that totally moves. Or, maybe I shouldn’t. Knowing me, I’d probably blow it on an animated cat GIF. Wait, did I say blow it? I meant can I have this now please?

Also, looking at his animated tattoos, I’m reminded of the singing muses on the vases in Hercules. These definitely have their own style to them, and I’m curious to see how closely they match the actual tribal tattoo style of the region.

Oh, and how could I forget: if the music sounds familiar, it’s because Disney enlisted Lin-Manuel Miranda to help them out with some original songs.

Don’t forget to also check out the neat merch they showed off in the Facebook Live preview announcing the impending TV spot.
