Hideo Kojima, no stranger to incredibly strange and convoluted games, has apparently devised yet another one to build hype for his upcoming game, Death Stranding. You can check out the incredibly cryptic trailer for the game above, embedded in which—according to a series of tweets from the Kojima Productions Twitter account—is a “game” that has already begun. One of the tweets reads, “Our game is still far from being released but the ‘game’ has already begun. What are you able to spot?” Hmm.

Death Stranding stars Norman Reedus, who became good buddies with Kojima after appearing in his Silent Hill “interactive trailer,” PT, which was the center of a completely different clue hunt all on its own. Fans combed through the “interactive trailer” (read: demo) for seemingly nonsensical clues that would eventually connect to a larger, more overarching plot. Pretty typical fare for ARG fans, but there’s something about the way Kojima’s mind works that turns these hunts into something a little more than just ARGs.

After watching the E3 reveal trailer a couple times, I find myself falling back into a rabbit hole, combing through frame-by-frame in hopes of finding something interesting. That isn’t to say the trailer itself isn’t interesting—I mean, come on, it’s got a naked Reedus wandering a black sand beach—but the puzzler in me can’t help but wonder at what’s lying just beneath the surface.

Whatever this “game before the game” might be, I don’t know. But if you want to find out, go ahead and feel free to join the bunch of conspiracy theorists on Reddit over at /r/DeathStranding.
