That Live-Action Teen Titans in the Works? TNT Just Canned It

Recommended Videos

Remember that live-action Teen Titans TV show that TNT had in the works? We felt pretty excited about it last year, given its plan to include a fantastic female-dominated roster of cool characters (Barbara Gordon, Raven, Starfire, and Dawn Granger — plus Nightwing and Hank Hall). Well … time to stop feeling excited, I guess, because TNT has just pulled the plug on that whole idea.

When asked whether the show was still in development, network president Kevin Reilly told TVLine, “It is not. We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go.” I guess this doesn’t come as a huge surprise, given that Reilly has expressed doubts about the project last May: “I sat down with Akiva [Goldsman, the writer for the live-action Teen Titans pilot] and said — and he ultimately agreed — that the [TV] landscape right now is well-serviced on the superhero front. So what space is this going to inhabit?”

At that time, Reilly and Goldsman seemed convinced they could do something “very, very interesting” and “excellent” with the property (in Reilly’s words). But something must have dimmed their spirits since then — perhaps the success of Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and upcoming Legends of Tomorrow show made the “landscape” feel too crowded to break into right now. That makes sense, but it is a shame that a show featuring so many young super-heroines ended up getting axed.
