Jerry Bruckheimer is Adapting YA Novel The Cruelty

Think Taken, but instead it's a teenage girl in possession of special skills.

Now, this is interesting: it’s being reported that Jerry Bruckheimer and Paramount have secured the rights to a young adult novel to adapt it for the silver screen.

The Cruelty, written by S. Bergstrom, was originally published by the author in 2014 and has been getting some pretty positive buzz lately. It’s the debut novel from Bergstrom and is currently averaging a 4.33 rating over on Goodreads, but it’s the plot summary that has me super intrigued about what this film could potentially look like:

When her diplomat father is kidnapped and the U.S. Government is unable to help, 17 year-old Gwendolyn Bloom sets off across the sordid underbelly of Europe to rescue him. Following the only lead she has—the name of a Palestinian informer living in France—she plunges into a brutal world of arms smuggling and human trafficking. As she journeys from the slums of Paris, to the nightclubs of Berlin, to the heart of the most feared crime family in Prague, Gwendolyn discovers that to survive in this new world she must become every bit as cruel as the men she’s hunting.

Uh, so basically this is going to be like Taken, but we get to see a young WOMAN kicking ass and taking names instead? Count me in wholeheartedly. I know, I know, there’s always the potential that this could be handled poorly in one fashion or another, but I choose to remain cautiously optimistic.

Bergstrom also tweeted his excitement about the news earlier this week. That makes two of us, buddy.
