Mad Max: Schmoopy Road – Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy’s Stunt Doubles Got Married

There’s a lot to be grumpy and cynical about in this world. This story from the set of George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is the opposite of that.

Dane Grant and Dayna Porter are husband and wife thanks in part to their time spent as stunt doubles for Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron a few years ago. They met on the set of Fury Road in Namibia back in 2012 and told Stuff.co.nz their story:

“I saw Dayna straight away – she was the only girl from New Zealand and she stood out like a sore thumb,” says Dane.

“I saw her bag with her name on it and my opening line was literally, ‘Hi. I see you’re Dayna. I’m Dane’. That was about it.”

Dayna’s stuntwork goes back 20 years having worked on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess while Dane is a bit newer to the industry. He was actually filling in for Hardy’s main double, Jacob Tomuri, on set.

“So the two of us were doing this – dare I say – very S&M-type fight, it’s a love/hate mixture between these characters. They’re very close, there’s chains, they’re holding each other in very intimate positions, and the longer we were doing it the more we’re kind of eyeing each other up,” Dane laughs, a little abashed.

“We’ve said it before and it’s quite cheesy, but it really was love at first sight. While we were punching each other we were falling for each other – quite rapidly.”

It’s an unlikely meeting ground, and Dane calls it fate, saying “stars aligned”.

Long story short, the two are now married and Dane helps her run the New Zealand stunt school she opened in 2010. They also found time to make this little guy together.
