In delightful news, Toby Froud, the man who as an infant played Sarah’s half-brother in Jim Henson’s 1986 movie Labyrinth, is now a puppeteer and director. Froud, the son of Dark Crystal and Labyrinth designers Brian and Wendy Froud, recently premiered his live-action puppet short Lessons Learned. The film was executive produced by Heather Henson, and tells the story of a boy who gets transported to a very creep land.

As someone who grew up loving Jim Henson’s stories, this clip from Lessons resurrected a lot of the wonder and terror of my childhood for me. I can only imagine what the experience of directing was like for Froud, who literally grew up in a Henson story. The puppeteer spoke to The Portland Monthly Mag in June, saying that his unique childhood was full of “vivid memories of goblins’ faces and strange creatures and chaos around me.” With his work on Lessons and films like ParaNorman, it seems Froud is extending that legacy to another lucky generation of kids.

I’m just glad to see he survived this particular Bowie-move in one piece!
