Calm Down, Everyone. Tim Burton’s Not Confirmed to Direct the Beetlejuice Sequel

Okay You Primitive Screwheads

I’ve seen a few sites report that it’s “confirmed” that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are returning for the long-gestating sequel to Burton’s best movie, Beetlejuice. (Yeah, I said it. Come at me.) That’s not exactly the case, but it is looking (somewhat) possible. So what’s really going on?

The rumor that Burton would be directing the Beetlejuice sequel started with The Schmoes Know podcast, which said they had a “VERY RELIABLE” (their caps) inside source that Burton is considering dropping out of the film adaptation of Ransom Riggs‘s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children because he just wants to do Beetlejuice 2 SO. MUCH. But then he was able to rearrange his schedule so he’d be doing both. The Wrap then “confirmed” that he’s in talks for Beetlejuice 2. I put confirmed in quotation marks because the source is “multiple individuals familiar with the project.” Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t think something’s confirmed unless someone involved with the project (so, in this case, Burton or a someone from Warner Bros.) actually goes on record as saying it’s true.

“Confirmed.” I do not think it means what you think it means.

The Wrap also notes that Michael Keaton is “expected to reprise” the role of Beetlejuice.

There you have it. As always, when the source of a rumor is “multiple anonymous sources,” have your grain of salt handy. Personally I wouldn’t hold my breath for this one, as Burton doesn’t really do sequels. The only one has been Batman Returns. And why would he go back to Beetlejuice? Why now, when it’s been in development hell for years? Yeah, it’s being written by Seth Grahame-Smith, with whom Burton has previously collaborated. But that collaboration was Dark Shadows, and we saw how that turned out. And sure, Burton’s recent output hasn’t exactly been up to the standard he established back in the day. But don’t slide further down the rabbit hole, Tim! Don’t do this! Let this movie die (permanently)!

On the plus side: He’s directing a film version of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children? How did I not know about that? It’s an excellent book! Pretty cool.
