CG Rocketeer Fan Film Is Adorable [Video]

A filmmaker named John Banana is a big fan of the late Dave Stevens, the creator of the Rocketeer and an award-winning artist. (Trivia: He was the first recipient of Comic-Con International’s Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award.) Before Disney turned it into a feature film in 1991, it was a retro-feeling comic book inspired by Saturday matinee idols. Banana was so moved by it that for the movie’s 20th anniversary, he created this computer-animated short that would, honestly, be kind of awesome as a full-length film.

    It looks nice and all, and it’s certainly impressive, but it won’t stop me continuing to lament the death of traditional animation. I can’t help thinking this would look even cooler with 2-D artwork instead of the same plastic-y facade generic CG artwork can’t escape. It really looks no different than a Pixar or Dreamworks movie. :

    To me it would look good either way.  I’m a fan of both traditional 2d and 3d.  And btw, what is wrong that it looks like a Pixar film?  Pixar is one of the few animation studios that is doing CG right, imho.

    What is wrong with it looking like a Pixar film is Pixar -still- is CG. Call me old and curmudgeonly if you must but I will never favor this shiny samey CG over the beauty of 2-D animation and all its variant styles. Even the widest variations in CG styles (when it comes to movies these days) waver only the slightest bit from each other.

    I’m going to have to disagree.

    CG means ‘computer generated’ and I remember very good animations like “Dexter’s Laboratory” or “Super powerful girls”, the two created with Macromedia Flash (now Adobe Flash) and don’t look anything like this or Pixar’s animations.In fact, all direct to DVD 2d Disney’s animations are ‘computer generated’ and don’t look anything like this.

    This is just a style of CG animation that Pixar dominates.

    I recommend to you ‘Renaissance’ and ‘A Scanner Darkly’. two very different styles of CG 2d animation.
