Gender Bendery

At Least One of the Choices in this Genderswapped LotR Recasting Will Make Your Jaw Drop

I’ll just start with the one that dropped my jaw. Like all fan recasts, there are some here that you’re probably going to disagree with (personally, I think it’s imperative to pick actresses for Faramir and Boromir that look like they could be siblings in order to recreate the uncanny family resemblance between Sean Bean and David Wenham), but we’ve put the ones that we found most interesting in a gallery.

And seriously, Katee Sackoff as Samwise the Brave? I am already crying tears. You can find the rest of this fancast on LiveJournal.

Did anyone notice, that in the new commercials for Morgan Freeman’s Through the Wormhole, the first thing in his list responding to “Why do we exist?” is Helen Mirren.

Paul Bettany and GEENA DAVIS!!! <3 <3 <3

  • Brooke Michelle

Paul Bettany can genderswap iIN MY PANTS. Wait, that doesn’t make any sense. But still, in my pants.

  • Anonymous

Really? Katee Sackhoff as Samwise? Before I even saw her slide I was thinking of her as Boromir. Plus:
    Julian Sands as Galadriel
    Saoirse Ronan as Frodo

  • Craig Oxbrow

Sackhoff as Sam is the one that doesn’t work for me, actually. I’d want someone who doesn’t seem badass, so Sam’s toughness and determination are more of a surprise. Alyson Hannigan, maybe?

  • electrasteph

I want to see *this* version so much. Primarily female cast, with a handful of supporting guy characters. It would be awesome.

I started scratching my head when I hit Geena Davis as Gimli.

  • Anonymous

HA! Pick the ‘Tallest living female actress’ (trademark) for the dwarf. it’s not just gender being swapped here.

  • Anonymous

I’d have said they needed someone a little softer around the edges to play Sam; someone whose strength is all on the inside. Katee doesn’t look like a gentle gardener, she looks like someone who knows 34 ways to kill a man with a carrot.

Check out my update for Samwise.

  • electrasteph

I had to click through to see who Frodo was going to be – Alexis Bledel as that character is really an inspired choice, too.

  • electrasteph

Also, I don’t think that Tilda Swinton and Sienna Guillory are that far apart in looks. They could definitely look like sisters with the right styling.

I’ll just leave a link to this picture of the Fellowship cast, including the massive John Rys-Davis, here.

  • DarthBetty

Not only swapped in gender, but in height as well??

  • DarthBetty

  • Apiphobic

John Rhys-Davies, who plays Gimli, is over 6 feet tall. Geena Davis isn’t that much shorter than him. Movie magic!

That’s kinda who I had in mind, although I haven’t had enough coffee yet to really give it some detailed thought. ;)

Katee Sackhoff should have been Boromir. If find it weird that, of all people, she’s the one they miscast. There’s so few good action actresses out there, they cast her as a non-action part.

  • Anonymous

    That photo is CLEARLY CGI.

My favorite part of this fact is that they didn’t have to hire a height double to make Gimli look big when he was standing alongside the Hobbit actors because JRD was already that tall compared to them.

I would watch the hell out of this!!!!!!!

  • AnnaB

    And yet we get it.

  • Octochan

He certainly has that otherworldly beauty you need to be a high elf.

  • Anonymous

A lot of these choices are fantastic (Paul Bettany as Galadriel! Glenn Close!). The ones I most disagree with are Katee Sackhoff as Samwise (as others have said, too badass already) and Tilda Swinton as Boromir. She is clearly an elf (Elrond or Celeborn? Or Thranduil, to get into The Hobbit).

  • Craig Oxbrow

I haven’t seen Nurse Jackie, but based on a quick GIS she looks the part.

  • R.O.U.S.

Salivating over Paul Bettany and Cate Blanchett. NOMS.

  • Mina

Not seeing Sackhoff as Sam. And I would love Geena Davis except that I’d kinda like to see the fact that Dwarf women are a little more “manly” in appearance preserved. It would be fun to see a rougher, more macho lady in the group. Of course, she could just be made up to look that way. Movie makeup magic!

I would LOVE to see this as an actual thing though. Somebody make this! Not even as a gender-swapped LOTR necessarily, just some sort of medieval fantasy film where most of cast is female. It would be awesome.

  • Emily

I’m not all that well versed in who acted in what and how good an actor is, but just seeing a female LOTR cast is making me so happy. I have a new idea added to my day dreams!

  • Allison Hoekwater

Or would they be Entwives. :)

  • Anonymous

Gimli is the kind of role you need to hear more than see. Pulling up a few random youtubes, it works, IMHO.

  • Anonymous

    Glenn Close owns Denethor.

Meanwhile, can I sell anyone on Allison Janney for Bombadil?

  • Magic Xylophone

That would be more of a raceswap, wouldn’t it?

  • Magic Xylophone

    Or Radagast.

  • Magic Xylophone

Julie Walters could play a good Gimli.

  • Aundrea Singer

Completely seconded. Gwyneth Paltrow? She comes across as sweet enough.

Who would be Frodo or Golum?

  • Lana M.

So the only women that exist are white, unless specified to be of color? Oh, right, white is “default.”

It said “gender-swap” but there’s zero reason none of these characters couldn’t be WOC, except for the fact popular fantasy narratives have always tended to be super white. Magical races can exist, but hale no to difference races of people.

  • Anonymous

I can totally see this working!

Well then Rosanne Barr might be a better choice over Geena Davis.

  • Anonymous

She totally has the physical comedy sense to really make Radagast work.

  • Anonymous

It’s not so much the gender swapping as the “cute celebrities casting” that’s troubling. Especially since they are definitely not right for the parts. Mirren and Close are great choices though. And Blanchett played Bob Dylan, she could be Aragorn, no sweat.

  • Magic Xylophone

I get that. But isn’t the point of a swap to keep everything about the characters the same as the original except for the aspect you’re swapping?

Like, you wouldn’t say you’re doing a “race swapped Wonder Woman” if you’re drawing a 80-year-old bald Chinese dude.

  • Amourah

Meh. Maybe Geena Davis as Gimli. But even then, meh.

  • Anonymous

Definitely the movie versions, going by the Frodo casting. Still, there’s plenty of popular female-focused fantasy out there: I’d like to see them get some love over genderswapped versions of male-focused fantasy. It’s still fun, of course, but, well, you know.
