What's with the name?

Allow us to explain.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

What’s This? A Movie About the Historical Origin of the Vibrator?

With Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, and Jonathan Pryce? Addressing the severe mental strain placed on women in a culture that corralled their ambitions; the willful blindness of Victorian doctors to the existence of women’s sexual pleasure; and hand cramps?

Tickets, please.

(Thanks, Justin!)

It’s like someone made a movie just for me.

So, every time I’ve heard the phrase, “She’s hysterical!” or in the case of comedies, “That was hysterical…”

Sometimes the world is a wonderful and amusing place to live.

Sadly, neither of those statements apply to the vibrator scene in The Ugly Truth.

Is it an adaptation of “In the next room, or the vibrator play”?  I have to admit, I had mixed feelings about it which I won’t repeat since they are here: http://feklar.livejournal.com/69900.html.

Yup, the root of “hysterical” is the greek(?) word for female genetalia (hence, hysterectomy), from back in the day when we thought that madness and irrationality was an inherently feminine affliction. Only women went crazy, and any man who went mad clearly just didn’t have the balls to stay sane.

That is…hah. I cannot think of a downside to this treatment.

Hah! This looks like it’s going to be amazingly funny. I’ll definitely be taking my BFF to see it.

Vibrators are great now, but a lot of sexism went on behind their creation.
