Bronies Buck Traditional Masculinity With My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic [VIDEO]

Thanks to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, normative masculinity might be expanding to include values and interests usually relegated to women. You know, like respect and ponies. Thankfully, men no longer have to shy away from the magic of love, friendship, and tolerance, at least in the online Brony community. Watch Mike Rugnetta use gender theory in order to analyze the emergence, and importance, of Brony culture.

I’ve watched a few episodes. It’s a well-made show, but doesn’t really grab me. Now playing with My Little Pony figures with my daughters — that’s fun.

I like the brony attitude. Like what you like and ignore what other people think. Don’t let someone else define your identity.

The only time I ever encounter bronies are on the boards of 4Chan. Unfortunately, I’ve found them to be one of the most annoying groups of people on the internet. More annoying than the furries, pedos, trolls, and hipsters combined. When given their own /mlp/ board, they largely refuse to use it and instead continue to plague boards like /b/ with their threads. Maybe if they actually were pretending to enjoy the show to be ironic, then I could just roll my eyes and twiddle my thumbs, waiting for the fad to die out.

I have a lot of mixed reactions to bronies. On one hand, yes they’re challenging gender roles, on the other hand, a lot of them that I’ve encountered are not closer to being more tolerant of femininity, they just want gold stars for liking this one thing. And really, it’s not that hard to like a cutesy colorful show about a collection of girl tropes. Male otaku do it all the time with various anime and dating sims, and they’re no closer to challenging gender roles than the next guy.

    Do man-children count as men…?

I suspect Faust gave the show darker themes and anime-style worldbuilding, making it more attractive to geeks of both genders.

I never got into that series because the flash based animation put me off a bit.

so being a heterosexual dude in your twenties means you’re not a sexual deviant or a moron? my dating history suggests otherwise.

While he duly notes that both men and women are doing things that break traditional gender roles, he missed noting that men and boys tend to come under more fire for doing “girly” things.  That’s one reason why there’s a buzz around Bronies.

You know, TMS, you might want to pay attention to the ugly side of brony fandom. Because these guys aren’t challenging anything and they want a bleeping badge for it still. Do you have any idea of the blatant misogyny, the aggression, the racism, and the intolerance that come from this fandom? Moreso than any other fandom if only because you can’t escape it no matter where you go? That’s why people hate bronies, not because they challenge gender norms.

(blablabla, not all bronies are like that, blablabla, the ones who are aren’t challenged much and hey, still they make the image of bronies that is being hated.)

I saw a video of a brony where he kept calling the female character male? Like he kept using “he” to describe him…I mean I don’t mean to get pissed off at him ignoring the female identity of this cartoon character but…it was a bit annoying.

I watch mlp with my boyfriend but he isn’t like these ~special snowflakes~ you see online.  The majority of this fandom hates on the old gens of mlp which fim wouldn’t exist without, bashes on the toys because they don’t suit their demographic and excludes women/girls which idk are the target audience.

I’m so glad these white cisgendered guys are being so brave about liking a TV show. They’re really paving the way for a new, more nuanced understanding of gender. Thanks for showing us how to do it, guys!!

I absolutely love the show and consider myself a brony, but the fandom itself is a little… Strange…

There’s a brony I know that bases his own religion on ponies and tries to convert people actively. Whenever someone asks what he’ll do when the fandom dies, he pledges his life that it will never happen and if it does, he’ll just work on converting people to his religion, ‘Ponism’ :S
Also many of the guys in the fandom ignore girls that share their love of the show, many not considering females ‘true fans’ or bronies. I’ve come across people calling me out ’cause ‘I don’t get any negativity when I watch the show’ when, in reality, yes I do omg
I dunno, it’s great that people can get past how it’s traditionally a ‘little kids’ show, but I wish the fandom would stop being so dumb :c

Yeah Bronies are totally changing the concept of masculinity by appropriating a cartoon for young girls and:
-Claiming to be the true audience, because little girls are stupid
-Making creepy sex fanart of the underage female characters

Bronies are every shitty thing about male nerds. They just trot the gender equality thing around to validate their creepy obsession.

Bronies! They will love and tolerate the sh*t out of you. Unless you’re a female, apparently.
