Time Travel to the 80s With Us, For the Two Minutes Joaquin Phoenix Got to Be Superboy

Good morning. Welcome to the opening of one episode of Superboy, which ran from 1988 to 1992. Ah, the 80s and early 90s, when it was still considered reasonable and not hilarious to cast obvious adults in the roles of leather and chain-clad school bullies who terrorized actual children. In this episode a young Joaquin Phoenix (then still Leaf Phoenix) guest starred as a kid who, apparently, takes control of a nuclear submarine to impress a pretty girl.

And also vividly hallucinates about the reign of terror on which he would embark had he the powers of Superboy. Just like Lex Luthor.

I mean this nothing but complimentary – but from the still frame, and to some extent in the video – I thought that this was a pleasing take on “SuperGirl” !
