Eek! Someone’s Going To Die On The New Season of The Simpsons

Executive producer Al Jean announced that a major character will kick the bucket in The Simpsons‘ 25th season. But who?!

Is this just an attempt to keep the aging show in the news? Probably. Do I care? No. This season is going to have Guillermo del Toro for the Treehouse of Horror opening, a guest appearance by Stan Lee, a Simpsons/Futurama crossover, and now a major character death. Things are getting intense. As to which character will die, Jean said:

“I’ll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.”

Knowing The Simpsons, this doesn’t really narrow things down much. A whole slew of actors have won Emmys for work on the show, often for voicing multiple characters at once. Heck, people were winning Emmys for The Simpsons before I was born. It’s really anybody’s guess as to which of them is getting booted. Besides, they’ll probably do everything they can to mislead us in the time leading up to the episode. My preliminary shot in the dark would be that it’s Marge’s mother, voiced by Julie Kavner, but don’t hold me to that.

Whoever it is, I’m sure they’ll depart in proper Simpsons fashion: silly, ridiculous, and kinda heartfelt nonetheless.

10 will get you 20 it’s Montgomery Burns.

My money is on it being Grandpa.

  • silvergray

    What if it’s Bart?

I realize the Simpsons are all about the main family characters, but try and imagine the Simpsons without Bart. A two girl family… no one for Homer to do child abuse to… no one to start the show by writing on the blackboard…

Plus… Imagine how wild something like that would be. It will be Death of Superman news coverage all over again. A character that many remember, but not everyone has had the time to sit down and watch, has suddenly died. Suddenly Bart and the Simpsons become relevant again. Then 4 fake Barts will appear… etc…

  • Ryan Byers

    I’m going with Moe.

  • Laura Ross

    I bet it’s Barney Gumble.

  • Deggsy

Wait, this show is still on?

  • According2Robyn

I predict that it’s Maggie, and that she’ll die of old age.

  • Sarah

Well considering that the last Simpson character I remember being killed off was Maude, I doubt it will be anyone in the main main cast.

Then again, I haven’t watched The Simpsons in ages.

  • totz the plaid

Well, this isn’t entirely new for the Simpsons. So far they’ve killed off:
    - “Bleeding Gums” Murphy
    - Mona Simpson
    - Dr. Marvin Munroe
    - Maude Flanders

Also, Hans Moleman has ‘died’ several times.

My guess? They’ll bring back Troy McClure with Billy West filling in for the late Phil Hartman and kill him off.

Then again, they could actually shake things up and kill off a secondary recurring character (much like Maude, Marvin and Bleeding Gums were).

    Who might that be?
    - Lionel Hutz
    - Kearney
    - Skinners’s Mom
    - Mrs. Bouvier (Marge’s Mom)

I still think it’ll be Troy McClure.

    - They haven’t used him in YEARS. I think the last time was in the 10th Season before Phil Hartman was murdered.
    - Billy West can do a great Hartman voice as proven by his portrayal of Zapp Brannigan on Futurama.
    - Despite not having appeared for well over a decade, McClure is still a beloved fan-favorite character.

Well, they’ve owed us that “Love-Matic Grandpa” series for over a decade now…

Zapp Brannigan is not a good Phil Hartman voice. It’s a good Billy West voice, which is to say that it’s almost immediately identifiable as Billy West.

It was supposed to be Phil, and Billy is clearly tributing Phil in the performance, but there’s no danger one will be confused for the other.

    Comic Book Guy.

He drops all DC and Marvel comics, and trips over all the money he saves, breaking his neck.

  • Anonymous

Dr. Nick got killed off in the movie. Can’t remember if it was permanent… that’s around the time I stopped watching. >_>

But I thought they retired Hartman’s characters out of respect?

  • totz the plaid

I don’t think the movie is canon (I stopped watching on TV before it came out, but saw the movie in theaters anyway)…

Also, yeah, I think they did, but it’s been 15 years and a lot of different people are involved, so that may have changed.

  • totz the plaid

It’s close-enough for 15 years later, and it’s still pretty damn good for what it is.

  • TokenOfficeGoth

Or suffers a massive heart attack…while eating a KFC Double Down…after realizing he’s just gotten grease on an Action Comics #1?

  • Lien

Sideshow bob. He took one too many rake to the face…

  • Fisty

Billy West sounds just like Billy West almost always. Kinda like DiMaggio, even though they’re both kings of v/o and comedy.

  • Fisty

    Still a great show.

  • Mina

I think I might die too if I did that.

What is that? “Game of Thrones”? ;-) ;-)

I guess it’s the cat. The Cat is over 20 years old now, right? ;-) ;-9 ;-)

  • Nick Gaston

Which cast member was haggling for a raise this time?

  • Anonymous

Nonsense. Burns is gonna outlive everyone out of sheer spite.

  • Erica Throne

It’s not been the same cat. I’m more concerned for the dog if we’re talking age of pets, here. Wait. Is the dog still around? when was the last time I even watched The Simpsons…

  • Anonymous

He’ll outlive everyone else because he’ll have them all killed.
    “Smithers, release the atomic hounds.”

  • Robert Vary

“Heck, people were winning Emmys for The Simpsons before I was born.”

…oh my god, I feel so old now.

  • Robert Vary

The character was retired and obliquely killed off-screen, seen with references to a Dr. Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital, and a Dr. Marvin Monroe Memorial Gymnasium, along with a couple of other references. He does show up again once, though, claiming to have been very sick.

So…the “writer” of this “article” (can’t call bloggers actual writers) thinks that a character that has been in about 1% of the episodes is a “major character”?

  • Anonymous

Uhhh…Lionel Hutz hasn’t been on in a decade and a half. Along with Troy McClure, they dropped him when Hartman died.

  • Anonymous

There really AREN’T that many choices.(Again, leave it to a blogger to not bother simply going to IMDb to do SOME research.) While pretty much the entire cast won the Emmy in 1992, most won it for just one specific character. Every female who won an Emmy won it for one character, and only 1, Edna Krabapple, could be considered a major character and would be expendable. None of the main women are going to go. So, if it is not Edna, it is a man. Other than that, it could be Grampa, Moe, Apu, Wiggum…(any Hank Azaria character), Sideshow Bob, Rabbi Krustofsky (would have to be off camera since Jackie Mason has been dead for years) or Princess Penelope…which is not a major character.

  • totz the plaid

I thought I’d seen him more recently than that… *shrugs* Guess I remembered incorrectly.

  • totz the plaid

Just remembered, I was accidentally swapping Hutz in for Ol’ Gil in those later appearances. They both seem to fill similar (but distinct) roles in their plots, and… *shrugs*

Oh hell, I don’t know why I swapped Lionel Hutz in for Gil, but that’s what I must’ve done.

Maybe Smithers will die? He couldn’t live with the pain of his heart belonging to someone who will never return their love. The pain was just too much to bear.

  • Emily Hill

I’m saying Grandpa he is a major supporting character I really don’t think they kill off any of the simpson family I.E. Homer Marge or the kids atleast I hope not last thing we need is the creepy pasta nuts saying barts dead its true

  • Laura Truxillo

What if he “dies” but becomes the first Futurama Head-in-a-Jar?

  • Joanna

For some reason the first characters that sprung to mind were Sideshow Bob and Krusty’s dad.

  • Brian

Hutz made a few background appearances after Hartman’s death, in crowd scenes and such, but I haven’t seen him in a long time. They are both still in the comics, though.
