People Try to Figure Out Who J. August Richards Is Playing In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Think It Might Be Luke Cage

Since the first trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. came out (I don’t count the teaser-for-the-teaser that came out the day before, because that marketing trend is messed up) people have been trying to figure out who Angel alum J. August Richards is playing. The predominant theory? Luke Cage.

In the first trailer he pops up with super strength and some sort of invulnerability, and then in the longer one released a few days later he’s clearly established as an unnamed superhero being sought by S.H.I.E.L.D. and, possibly, other, more nefarious people who would wish to use his powers for evil. (Eau de Alphas, anyone?).

The superhuman strength thing fits with Cage, but the same can be said of many superheroes, and if AoSHIELD wanted to create their own, new character super-strength would be a pretty generic power to give him. That said, seeing as AoSHIELD is a Marvel production and all, it’s unlikely that they’d make up new supers, especially when Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige has previously said that heroes new to the MCU might show up on AoSHIELD. Comic Book Resources also notes that Richards is wearing yellowish pants in one clip, which might be a nod to Cage’s ’70s blue and yellow outfit. Sounds like a stretch, but you never know. Also reaching deep to the bottom of the barrel: Marvel is reportedly considering script ideas for several major characters not already movie-fied, among them Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Iron Fist, and Ms. Marvel. But not Luke Cage. Mayhaps because he’s already been taken by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Possibly of relevance is this weird alien-looking thing attached to his arm. The other major theory has Richards playing Rage from the New Warriors.

What say you? Would you leap from your seat in glee if Richards is in fact playing Luke Cage?

I saw speculation on Tumblr that it’s Eli from Young Avengers — which would be amazing, but I doubt it (Red, White, and Black is a great story, but as a background for one of several characters on a new show, it seems cumbersome.)

I think it’s Luke Cage. I like the idea of having him (and maybe Danny Rand and Jessica Jones) introduced on the show–they’ve always seemed like more down to earth Avengers to me, and while I’m sure that a movie starring them could be awesome, I have doubts that the end product would actually be awesome.

I’m really hoping that he’s Luke Cage, because then there’s a good chance of getting Jessica Jones.

  • The Gaf

Here’s the “proof” supporting Rage. Plus, Marvel Studios only just got Cage/Iron Fist movies rights back- it may still be an issue… “RT @radtke32712 Marvel bumper always has clues. It’s not Power Man, it’s Rage of New Warriors fame. #coulsonlives @AgentsofSHIELD “

  • CyberIstari

    Sweet Christmas!

  • LizbethAnne

Oh wow, I never eve noticed the bumper wasn’t the same every time. Now I feel a pressing need to go through all of them frame by frame…

  • John Wao

Luke Cage is who I immediately thought of.

  • Elizabeth Wells

Meh, I’m just going to hope Luke Cage shows up until he does. (However long that is)

  • The Gaf

Here’s a fresh one for you- not Rage nor Luke Cage! A character beginning with “M” that he wont name, so its obviously someone we know- dare they Miles Morales us? Since the real Spidey is conflicted contractually….

  • Sarah M

Same. I’d love to see Jessica Jones get her moment on tv because Lord knows it isn’t happening in the comics atm.

  • Anonymous

No way, someone SHOULD do a something with Miles Morales but it wouldn’t be right unless he was a young kid. That’s a major part of his stories. He’d just be a completely different character that happens to have Miles’ name.

  • Gerald Kirby

If J. August Richards is indeed playing Luke Cage, it would be the first time I might find the character charismatic.

  • joshua barsody

I would love Luke Cage, but Eli would be my guess. He has that arm thing and the investigator girl picks up a burnt version of one, so maybe instead of drugs, it’s been updated to alien tech that gives powers?

  • Travis Fischer

It’s not Luke Cage. I don’t understand why this theory is so popular. That’s WAY too big a name to throw into SHIELD right off the bat.

  • Totz_the_Plaid

    Plausible existing characters:
    Luke Cage
    Patriot (Eli Bradley)
    Rage (Elvin Halliday)
…or someone that nobody else seems to have brought up: Gauntlet.

Okay, so he doesn’t have the actual gauntlet that is pretty essential to his character, and the tech is on the wrong forearm, but it could be his origin story in the show.

It’s probably someone new, unfortunately, however….

  • Brian

See, I think they’d want to throw in the biggest name they can think of that wouldn’t be likely to get their own movie.

  • Daphnaie

Except that image has been in the bumper since as early as 2006 apparently, so it’s not really proof of anything.

  • Paul Blake

Red White And Black wasn’t Eli’s story line. That was Isaiah Bradley’s. Eli was one of the founders of the young avengers I believe.

  • Djibril Camara

my guess it is Rage because he is showed leaping at the end of the trailer and running extremely fast Luke Cage doesn’t have those abilities and it would just be silly and repetitive to have another captain america. And plus Luke Cage is a big super hero that deserves a little bit more than a show on ABC

  • The Gaf

cool- didnt do the research. thanks for finding that. Thats why I quoted “proof” :D

  • The Gaf

In this interview, he says that exactly- they were open to casting anyone regardless of ethnicity- also lending credence to the “not Luke Cage” theories…

  • Fisty

I hope it’s not Luke Cage, he deserves a higher billed actor than whoever that guy is. He also deserves someone who looks like he could kick some ass. Cutty please.

  • LizbethAnne

Yes, I know that–but Eli becomes a superhero to live up to his grandfather’s legacy (despite not having inherited his powers), and later gains powers because of his grandfather (he is injured, and Isaiah gives the blood for his blood transfusion). I feel like a pretty central part of Eli’s drive to be a hero/Young Avenger is tied to his grandfather’s story, both the example of heroism and his treatment by the government. Without the backstory, there’s no reason for him to have the powers.

(I really love Eli, and would love to see him on-screen, but Marvel’s facebook can’t post the RWB cover as part of a rememberance of the artist without getting a million nasty racist comments about it, so I doubt it’s coming soon.)

  • Rizz Rustbolt

My vote is on him being Harry Delgado.

  • Aundrea Singer

Personally, I would leap with glee for there to be a black regular cast member of AoShield. As long as he’s a cool character I’ll be happy with whatever hero he is. :)

  • Cole Harding

I was thinking the Same thing. It fits the Mo.

  • Cole Harding

Lol, have you read many Luke Cage Titles, New avengers im sure, how about his self titled series or the Thunderbolts? Dudes got a lot of Charisma… Deff a leading man

  • Cole Harding

Most Deff Michael J White, Guys got Steam and he looks like he might punch a hole through Titanium

  • Cole Harding

Agreed, black heroes do exists in Marvel besides Storm and Black Panther.
