Producer Graham King: Tomb Raider Movie Will Go “Back to the Roots”

Recommended Videos

The upcoming Tomb Raider film has a lot going for it, especially with they fact they got an Oscar-winning actress to portray one of the most iconic protagonists ever. But what direction will Roar Uthaug and screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet take to portray this character who’s gone through so many adventures, spin-offs, and evolutions?

It’s been said that the upcoming reboot set for a 2018 release and starring Alicia Vikander will draw from the popular 2013 video game reboot of the character, something producer Graham King just confirmed in an interview with Hey U Guys. King, in this statement, says the film will be an origin story with a strong emotional angle:

Well this is kind of what we call a “back to the roots story”. This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it, and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good, and I think we’ve got the right crew and a great director, and I think it’s going to be really fun making a film like this.

Lara’s complex relationship with her father is something the 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie touches on–but it’ll be interesting to see how this new film dives into that storyline. What do you think about the premise?
