Real Or Not Real?

S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Helicarrier Couldn’t Actually Exist. Nick Fury, You’ve Lied to Me for the Last Time. [VIDEO]

TechFeed’s Fact or Fictional sets its sights on the Helicarrier from The Avengers, asking astronomer Phil Plait whether it’s something that could actually exist. The verdict? A resounding “Ehhhhh… technically. But not really, no.” Turns out that amount of power it would take to keep it aloft makes the whole thing pretty impractical, plus the turbines blowing air down at the Earth’s surface at “faster than the speed of sound” would be an “environmental disaster.” Darnit, Nick Fury! First you trick the Avengers into believing Coulson’s dead, then you get my hopes up about a Helicarrier that will never actually exist. You’re on notice.

How about if the heli-carrier had some Helium bladders within and it was made from exotic composites? Current tech, not as likely, but perhaps future tech…

Heres the first part of an old article about the physics of the avengers. The guy shows his math too, but says that it would take way more than 4. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/55755
